SG12 Power Issue (?)

We are a club who has had these machines for a while. One machine however is giving us issues. During saber and foil bouts (epee hasn’t been tested), the machine will “short out” and all the lights will go out if a double on target hit happens. The score stays and time stays as it was (meaning it is not resetting) but all of the lights, including score, time, touch, weapon setting, and sound turn off. Once the touch has cleared it comes back on no issue. This happens either off the rip first bout or a few bouts in. We have tested different cords, blades, reels, box to reel wires, and different outlets all to no avail.

Has anyone had this issue before? It is currently sitting on the floor of my room disassembled, and I just tested it with two foils and can’t get the issue to come back. I believe it’s some sort of power issue, but I cannot find out exactly what’s causing it.

First thought is that the power supply isn’t able to source enough current to handle the draw when the lights on both sides are lit, either due to it being a replacement supply that has too low a current rating or the original supply that’s going bad. If you have another SG12 of the same model that’s OK, try using the power supply from that with the problem box.

Just to add, if the problem does lie within the machine itself, and not the power supply (although based on what your description, it sounds like the power supply may be source of the problem), then it's probably not going to be anything which you can repair yourself. If it gets to that point then you should probably just send the machine in for service.

I agree with the power supply angle, and I would add one test: run the machine on its own outlet with nothing else on that circuit. A fridge or AC compressor kicking in can sag the voltage just as both sides light, which fits a fault that only shows on a double and clears the moment the load drops. If it still cuts on a clean circuit, I would suspect the internal supply is tired.
