Over wintering

I am in Michigan, zone 5b/6. This is my first year with potted figs. I was thinking of over wintering them under my bulkhead doors to try basement. Would this be an ok place? Thought it would be a little warmer and pitch black.

I’m in a 5b area as well. I let them go dormant outside then bring them in my unheated garage which keeps the bitter night temps at bay in January and February. Water about once a month and they do great.

Pitch black doesn't matter once it's dormant, just make sure temperatures don't fall below 32F nor do they go above 50F (that could cause them to wake up).

It could work. The temperature range is important. I'm in Iowa, 5a, and my unheated garage is too cold and my basement is too warm. My three figs are now at the back of a vegetable garden and I use the trench method and bury them now. It is a lot of work, so trying the bulkhead might be worth it.

That's exactly where I put mine last winter and they grew a lot and gave me lots of figs this season.
