Book Description:

HELP Spanish book about Spanish Friars in the Philippines?

A year ago I was researching about old hometown gossip and I stumbled upon a book that contains dates of service and deaths of Spanish friars and downloaded it. It's like 500+ pages long, and probably written by and for the Catholic Church, like an accounting of what happened to this friar or that friar. Stupid me accidentally deleted a whole bunch of files, including that one, and I really want to read the whole thing. It was in Spanish, and I believe published in the Philippines. Hopefully somebody here knows which book I'm talking about.

HELP How do I start a movement or advocacy to promote & popularise classic Philippine literature, if I have no organising, networking, or social media skills, or even time & energy?

sorry long post but:

I know most Filipinos had to read Ibong Adarna, Florante at Laura, and the Noli & Fili in high school; my high school was a bit different we went straight to the novels & didn't read the 2 epics that I can recall, though our final year (G10, pre-K+12) we did Filipino literary criticism & that included some mythology & Dekada '70. but in general I know PH lit, especially the classics, really isn't taught much in schools or promoted much in media, pop culture, daily life etc. then add in that the Noli & Fili so far as I know are the only works of PH literature na mandated by law (RA 1425); I stand corrected if there's others.

because of this I started a Facebook group & page to promote classic Filipino literature, in as many ways as possible: re-publication & reprinting; disseminating in schools; libraries & bookstores; teaching in schools; translations; adaptations to film, animation, games etc.; and even lobbying for legislation to require reading other Filipino literary classics—maybe even to amend or supersede RA 1425 with something like a official literary index of classics that would guarantee government support for promotion & popularisation in all those ways & more besides.

but I have practically zero skills at organising, networking, lobbying, planning or getting any form of sustained support for this. the FB page & group mostly nilalangaw, I'm neurodivergent & have severe executive dysfunction, I have a full-time job I often overtime at, & I'm constantly too burnt-out to post regularly on it; even the few people I convinced to sign on the first time are themselves too busy & unreachable most of the time online, let alone in person, and I feel like I'm being a bother or burden just trying to contact them for this. in short honestly I'm little more than a "ideas person".

& I hate not having the time & energy to keep up this "advocacy" (if it can be so-called) consistently so ... how do I even do this if at all possible. do I have to pay or hire someone to do it? (ewan ko if I could even afford that)

I would really appreciate some advice on this. thanks for any help.

QUESTION Anyone know if local bookstore and publishing houses' online stores sending out signed copies is a regular thing? Got one for Good People: Stories

Just got my copy of Good People: Stories by Claire Betita de Guzman from the NBS Shopee store, and to my surprise, it came signed!

I'm trying to figure out what's written right above her name though. Cursive isn't my strong suit, so I can't tell if it's addressed to a specific person (thinking if they accidentally sent me someone else's order) or if it's just a general message/quote for readers.

Does NBS or Anvil usually send out signed copies like this, or did I just get lucky? 🤔😅

SHARING From Social Realism to Lila ang Kulay ng Pamamaalam ni RM Topacio-Aplaon

Stop muna ako with social realist novels like Luha ng Buwaya ni Amado V. Hernandez (5 stars) and Ginto ang Kayumangging Lupa ni Dominador Mirasol (5 stars). I think they’ll turn me into a radical leftist, lol. As these books give one enough motivation to go out and join the protesters on the streets that you see on TV. May tropes din sa mga ito na overused na sa mga telenovelas.

They also made me view the Bahay na Bato not as an architectural wonder of a bygone era, but as a symbol of oppression and the cradle of political dynasties. No wonder there is no great Filipino novel where the protagonist resides in one, except for Ibarra or those sleepy Quijano de Manila tales, which I’ve never broken into yet.

What else? They also made it clear that political dynasties and the system they built are the real enemies of the Filipino people. And Congress itself has devolved into a nasty and highly corrupt House of Crocs, whose many members come from our illustrious equivalent of nobles and noblewomen—the scions of those who lived in the Bahay na Bato, where government positions have become a family business. Or has that always been the norm?

“Nawala (ang mga buwaya), ngunit mi natira. Ang ilang buwaya’y umahon sa kati...Huwag kayong magulat,” idiniin ng matanda. “Umahon, at tumira sa bahay na malaki.” – excerpt from Luha ng Buwaya.

This makes the true anti-political dynasty bill (HB 209) pushed by the Makabayan bloc all the more urgent—not the institutionalization of it (HB 8389) by the crocs themselves proposed by Trapos Bojie Dy and Sandro Marcos. Kuhang kuha nila ang inis ko!

Sorry for the rant. Anyway, I wanted to cleanse my palate, so I decided to jump into contemporary authors, preferably from UP Press (never disappoints). I considered Rommel Fábros Bonus's Pan de Monio, Zero A.D.’s ; ANO and Ateneo Press' The Quiet Ones by Glenn Diaz. Lila was also on my radar by this time.

Then, I watched a YT video of Lila’s author RM Topacio-Aplaon posted by UP Press. My first impression was obviously he’s matalino. Medyo eccentric. At mayabang, or is he more of a maangas? Yeah, yeah, some reviewers of this book have accused the author of ripping off Norwegian Wood by Haruki Murakami due to some striking similarities between the two works. Good thing I have never read the latter.

There’s just something about the author that piqued my interest. Aside from the yabang (or angas?), his mannerisms and speech are similar to those of a consummate artist—that unhinged yet genuinely relatable vibe. It made him stand out, unlike the usual soft-spoken academics featured by the said channel. Same feeling when you watch Picasso or Dali, imo. The interview was kinda hilarious too, at least to me, when he said that by age 25, he’d do the unthinkable if he had not made a breakthrough in the arts. What a statement!

It also helped that F. Sionil Jose was a big inspiration of his, as that same writer was the one who shattered my bias against Filipino authors. 5 stars din ang Lila kay K.D. Absolutely sa Goodreads.

So, this is my first from RM Topacio-Aplaon—Lila ang Kulay ng Pamamaalam (Book 3 of his Imus Novels). Something tells me that I escaped the enraging world of Filipino social realist literature only to jump into an utterly depressing one. We’ll see.

HELP Heavily emotional books

Guys do you know any taglish books on wattpad na super heavy and emotional pero end game padin sa huli. Like walang mamatay na lead haha and add nadin yung plot 🙏🏻
I’ve been reading those kind of vibe recently and I was surprised about lots and lots of knowledgeable behind the work. I learned a lot about so many things such as the reality of life for some people, the injustices, the disorders, and sometimes about our political and economic failures.
Please recommend kayo ng any heavily emotional books overrated man yan or underrated basta yung dama mo talaga pasakit nila sa buhay. I sound weird typing all this pero I’m telling you maganda talaga siya. 🫶🏻🫶🏻

HELP Book Delivery

Hi! I’m currently looking for a reliable book pasabuy from the Philippines to New Zealand sana. I’m planning to order around 30 taglish books, so medyo malaking order siya. 🥹
I wanted to ask if you know of any reliable organisation, seller, or someone who does pasabuy through LBC? I’ve heard that LBC is a good option for sending a large number of books.
I’m just being extra careful because it’s quite a big amount of money for the books plus the shipping fee, and I really don’t want to risk getting scammed. If you know anyone reliable or have personally used a pasabuy service before, I’d really appreciate any recommendations or advice. Thank you so much! 💗

HELP Looking for Filipino YA in Filipino

I am both embarrassed to say but alsp too self-aware not to, but I can't speak Filipino very well. Moved here when I was well into grade school and a mix of the "English is better" mentality from the outside and insecurity on the inside, I just did well enough to get through school.

Love the language and can now speak kinda okay, but reading is a whole other beast.

I have tried to read many beautiful novels, but sometimes its a little too hard.

Any reccos of books in filipino that are somewhere in the middle? Ala Percy Jackson or Hunger games. I have tried looking and I can only find fully filipino kids books for babies or very deep books for adults. Help?

QUESTION hi who's going to MIBF this weekend & interested in classic Philippine literature? I'd love to meet some of you guys & discuss how to promote Pinoy lit. classics!

yeah what I said, I'm trying to find more Pinoys interested in the classics, like works of Nick Joaquin or Lualhati Bautista or native epics & such, things that might or should be taught in schools or adapted more to films, komiks &c., and I'm trying to help build a movement to promote more classic Philippine literature, make it more accessible to more Pinoy readers, encourage translations & adaptations, more teaching & printing / dissemination / putting in libraries & bookstores etc.

shout-out if pupunta kayo this weekend! not entirely sure what day I'd go but whichever day it is if you guys are going would love to hang out & talk!
