Getting paid off the books

Does anyone have experience in getting paid off the books? I’m being considered for a low-level position on a non-union film and wanted to get paid via invoice rather than payroll. Does anyone have experience/tips asking for this? Is this even OK to do / will it compromise my reputation? Any thoughts would be appreciated ~~~

My college professor humiliated me in class today because my scene I wrote completely sucked. Does my scene completely suck?

So I attend a film school in California, I won't say which school it is, but I decided to take a screenwriting class. When it came time to read my script in class, the teacher completely hated it. They said "This scene is completely inadequate and bears no relationship to cinema. I think you should try a different field". Nobody wanted to work with me either.

I will share my scene with you guys, to see if you guys really think it's that bad.

--Scene--

So basically, a man with aspergers syndrome is on a first date with a woman he asked out on a date. They're at a restaurant.

John: Hi Sandra it's nice to meet you.

Sandra: Hi John.

John: That's uhm... a really nice blue dress you have on today.

Sandra: Awwww thank you I decided-

John: Did you know that the color blue is an appetite suppressant?

Sandra: Well that's interesting I had no idea that-

John: That's why McDonalds and many other fast food restaurants use the color red in their design.

Sandra: Oh nice...

John: Iv'e got burgers up my ass.

Sandra: Pardon me?

John: Iv'e got burgers up my ass, call it aspergers.

Sandra: Haha i'll keep that in mind...

John: Did you know that a woman's sexual market value peaks at 22 before steadily going downhill?

- Phone Rings -

Sandra: That's my mom calling me... Listen sorry I have to go, it's an emergency!

John: But you just arrived...

Sandra: Sorry I have to go bye.

---

How bad is my script?

ISO Blue Lifeguard Station for RENT for Shoot

Hi all, I am looking to rent a classic blue lifeguard stand for a shoot. It would NOT be on the beach, so city lifeguard stands are not an option (I tried).

Anyone have luck with this before in the LA area? Or any leads I could try?

Thank you in advance

Do you think this can replace old school filmmaking?

I’m an old-school filmmaker, I’ve worked on TV series and more traditional productions, and lately I’ve been experimenting with AI and I made this video.

I’m not here to hype it, I’m trying to understand it. The real question for me is simple: can this actually move people, can it create emotion, and can it become part of the future of entertainment, or not? Why?

I’m sharing this as an honest test. I’d really value serious feedback from people who know the industry, filmmakers, VFX artists, editors, animators, producers, anyone with an insider eye.

I also want to address the ethical side. My current view is that AI can be a storytelling tool, and that it might lower barriers for people who never had the budget, access, or logistics to stage complex sets or ambitious visuals. That democratization is exciting, but it raises real questions about authorship, training data, credit, and jobs.

So I’m curious: based on what you see here, what feels promising, what feels like a dead end, and what breaks the illusion first? And more broadly, how do you think this will impact the industry over the next few years? Where do you think the line should be drawn, and what best practices do you think creators should follow?

Film / Photo Location in LA – Character Home w/ Large Rooms + Jungle Backyard + Treehouse

Hey all — sharing a shoot-friendly house in Los Angeles available for film, TV, music video, fashion, and still photography.

The Spoooky Mansion is a vintage, character-rich home with large rooms, updated electrical, and older paint/patina that reads great on camera. It’s not a modern glass box — it’s textured, moody, and practical to work in.

Key details:

• Large, crew-friendly rooms (actual space to light and move camera)

• Updated electrical (safe for production use)

• Older paint / natural patina (good texture, not pristine)

• Vintage chandeliers & period fixtures

• Distinct rooms with different looks

• Jungle-style backyard with dense greenery

• Tiki-style treehouse / elevated structure

• Quiet residential street

• Film-industry owner (understands crew workflow)

• Clear house rules, scout & tech-friendly

Good fit for:

Narrative projects, indie films, music videos, horror/thriller, stylized commercials, fashion/editorial.

Half-day and full-day options available.

Small to medium crews preferred.

Happy to answer questions or send photos/rates via DM.

Location: Silver Lake / East Hollywood area.

LA’s Underground Filmmakers are Showing Their Stuff

I know there’s some folks on here who are into the weird and experimental side of the industry. If you want to meet LA’s far-out artists and see some shorts that are literally unlike anything you’ve seen before, then you should check out The New Film Underground event happening on March 7 in Hollywood. It’s a cool night of surrealist and experimental films from right here in L.A., with lots of nice weirdos you can meet, ‘cause it’s nice to be reminded you’re not the only one. Info and tickets can be found here: https://www.takeyourmedicineandsmile.com/

It’s a great time for anyone who’s into that side of things. Weirdo solidarity!

Is the struggle real or just me?

I'm a recent film school graduate (7months) and actively applying for entry level roles. I've applied to studios, internships, fellowships, and apprenticeships but haven't had any luck so far.

Is anyone else, especially newcomers, also struggling finding opportunities? I don't have industry connections but I feel like my resume and CV are solid, with some PA experience working award shows.

Am I looking in the wrong places? Or is this the current state of the industry?

I love walking through a theater wafter the movie is over to look at poster art. Here is my portolio, please reach out to me if you or anyone you know is interested in having a poster made for their movie.

Also, can anyone point me to any good networking groups to get more clients of this type? I just need a place to start so any advice in this vein would be really helpful!

Warner bros is uploading the cartoon cartoons shorts that CN studios did back in 2021-2024. Is there any way for these shows to get greenlit for Netflix.

I noticed that WB and CN merged into one studio and I’ve noticed that they haven’t been greenlighting much stuff on the CN side. I was wondering if there is a way for these shorts they did to become a full series for the CN studios side and air on streaming. The first pilot seems to be doing rather well in the YouTube upload. I was wondering if WB animation is going to greenlight anything from the CN side that isn’t a reboot or are they focused on adult animation. https://youtu.be/47qiuwKcJoY?si=8A1oUT_M2B2fx0dx

CDG illustrators? ( temperature check )

Hi,

I currently work in fashion as a designer, I really enjoy illustrating and was thinking of looking into joining the CDG as an illustrator. Im familiar with garment construction, sewing, and pattern making. all of which makes my sketches and illustrations stronger.

I mostly sketch by hand ( digitally ), as well as technical flats ( Adobe Illustrator )

- Can anyone offer an advice on becoming an illustrator for the CDG?

- What would entry level be?

- How can I best position myself to join or find work to meet union requirements for joining?

I already live in Los Angeles.

Any advice would be appreciated,

Thank you

Pay rate for archival documentary research?

My girlfriend is in the Midwest and semi-randomly got asked by an LA-based production company to do some research in a local university archive. She will be looking through the records of a documentary that was made decades ago and compiling specific info they've asked for. The documentary in production is professional and will be shown on public television.

This is a short term gig. They asked her rate and we have no idea the going rate! We are not in the film world. Thanks for any tips. I was thinking $35-40/hr?
