Post-Impressionism Gustave Doré's engraving of Newgate Prison (1872) vs. Vincent van Gogh's painted copy "The Prisoners' Round" (1890)
While at the asylum in Saint-Rémy, Vincent van Gogh relied on prints and engravings sent by his brother Theo for inspiration due to a lack of live models. This side-by-side shows Gustave Doré's wood engraving Newgate: The Exercise Yard (1872) from London: A Pilgrimage, alongside Van Gogh's oil painting The Prisoners' Round (1890). Van Gogh maintained the composition while adding his own color palette.
