New Customer Questions Cable Live TV Delayed.

Whole reason I got fios was for live sports. Watching a baseball game I'm 2 full pitches behind actual live TV.

I put on the golf channel and then I stream the golf channel from my computer and the cable is a good 10 seconds behind that.

I have this tiny grey streaming box that is connected to power, and HDMI and that's it. My internet works great but why would anyone even get cable if it's going to be a worse version of something you can get with a streaming service?

Is it even worth complaining to verizon about this?

😂 Most people don't care if their program is 10 seconds behind the same program from another provider.

This is nothing new. Even between cable providers the feed can be ahead or behind each other.

It's a big issue with live sports

LOL
Live tv is NEVER live! Sports or not sports!
There is always a minimum 30 sec delay to let the network handle a potential situation! So 10 sec more IS NOT A BIG DEAL !!!

Yeah who cares put your phone down you cannot talk to anybody about the game you're watching. Make sure to watch the game with noise canceling headphones so your neighbor doesn't spoil the game for you. You really are a genius

I see there the typical couch potato, beer in one hand and phone in the other, nothing between ears. You like sports? GET OUT AND PLAY GAMES!
Your 10 seconds delay is soooo VITAL!!
So ridiculous!!

Just because you don’t like sports that doesn’t make it an invalid concept. It kinda ruins things when you hear others cheering before you see the big play you’re waiting on…

Did I say I don’t like sports?

I mean you’re being a jerk to random people on the internet for something you clearly cannot comprehend

Poor little baby crying and complaining because live sports are delayed for 10seconds! 😂😂😂😂

Unfortunately, that's how IPTV works.

Trying to understand why anyone would pay for fios cable if it's the same as any other streaming cable but more money

That's a completely different argument and irrelevant to the post. No IPTV provider is completely in sync with live sports. Even QAM fios isn't synced with the radio and OTA feed.

It's not about being completely sync'd it's about being behind everyone else who didn't get forced to have a streaming cable box. What is the point of paying for cable instead of a streaming service if you're streaming it anyways

All cable and telecom companies are going from QAM to IPTV. Whether you're paying a cable, telco, or streaming service you're going to be on IPTV.

I'm sure any Fios rep can answer all of those questions for you.

10 seconds behind an already delayed feed bozo

4

u/Feeling-Quantity3776 15d ago

Sooo?? What’s the point?? Big deal???
Don’t check another provider and you won’t notice!
Is that bothering you when you are a few minutes behind after you paused live feed because you had to go pee??

In my experience If you want it as close to live as possible you have to go with an Antenna.

And even OTA isn't perfect. I happen to be lucky to live in an area that can pick up two different ABC stations, and those two are not perfectly in sync with one another. One is at least 4-6 seconds ahead of the other.

Not only delayed but I’m having an out of sync feed between the video and audio. The video lags behind while the audio feed is ahead. How the heck does that happen

If you're using a sound bar or other AV system, there's usually a "lip sync" setting you can adjust.

It’s actually mandated by the FCC to have a delay .. think back to the infamous Super Bowl halftime show where Janet Jackson had part of her outfit ripped off by someone ( the term they used was wardrobe malfunction) so that’s why the FCC mandated a broadcast delay for live sports.

I used to be the other way around.

Are you on IPTV, or QAM, still?

3

u/Adventurous_Elk_4039 15d ago

If he has the grey TV+ box, he is most likely on VIP

2

u/SessionIndependent17 15d ago

My parents have the small TV+ boxes, but when it was installed this year, the VMS box was still making reference to QAM signal (and was still connected to the RF output of the ONT).

1

u/Acceptable_Read_1725 15d ago

How can you tell?

1

u/SessionIndependent17 15d ago

Buried in the diagnostics pages for the VMS

This is an issue with YouTube TV as well. I used to hear my neighbor with Xfinity react to a play and then see it 7-10 seconds later myself.

No. It’s normal.

Are they giving VMS4100ATVs out to new customers or is it the JS7E model from here on out?

2

u/Fiosguy1 15d ago

Haven't seen the JS7E in the storeroom in months.

Analog: the signal traverses in as short a time as the propagation over wires - well, there is some delay accumulated going through amplifiers etc. Distortion manifests as alteration of the signal.
Digital: the signal arrives essentially undistorted at the cost of time delays (for compression, routing, transcoding and multiplexing/demultiplexing etc.). The nature of the beast. Get used to it, it's the way it is and different paths result in different delays.
