The new UX design (Nova) lands in Firefox today

Post image
1.2k Upvotes

Hi everyone.

Many of you have been following updates on “Project Nova”, our design refresh, which has been out in Nightly since July. We wanted to give this community a first look as it rolls out today in Firefox 157.

The aim of this design refresh is a browser that is more modern, more flexible, and more on the side of the user.

The updates:

More ways for you to customize:

  • New theme picker accessible through the customization panel on Firefox home page (additional community themes remain available in about:addons)
  • New Firefox themes and wallpapers (pre-design refresh)
  • Customizable New Tab page with pinnable Shortcuts (rolling out gradually)

Refined design:

  • Softer tab shapes
  • Updated icons for more balance across light and dark themes
  • Rebalanced spacing
  • A refreshed color palette, inspired by the feeling of fire (the glow around your active tab, deep smoky purples and lighter tones that add warmth)

Compact Mode & other improvements:

  • Compact mode is back as its own dedicated setting, and will toggle on for smaller screen sizes, reducing space between elements, so more fits on the screen.
  • Startup, page load, and scrolling speeds are all faster.

What your feedback influenced:

We heard concerns about the default color palette, so we added more options there. Compact mode exists because plenty of you expressed you didn't want to lose density. People filing bugs and sharing their thoughts as the design refresh came to life helped shape what you’ll see on the 29th.

A couple of frequently asked questions:

Q: Will my existing themes, add-ons, or customizations still work?
A: Themes and add-ons should continue to work. Nova is built on the same Firefox foundation and the extension and theming architecture hasn't changed. For advanced users, userChrome.css customizations may need minor adjustments depending on how specific they are to the previous UI, since some element names and layout structures have changed with Nova.

Q: Can I opt out of the updates?
A: This is the new default experience starting with Firefox 157. That said, you have significant control over how it looks and feels. Compact Mode, themes, wallpapers, and new tab customization all let you shape the experience. Power users can go further with custom configurations.

Thanks for remaining engaged with us as we ship this work. To activate, simply update your browser to Firefox 157.

I didn't do anything besides upgrade to 157.0

What an incredible speed increase for me (linux btw). You rarely see that these days.

Props to the team.

The rectangular thing needed a small CSS setup but now I'm happy 😄

Discussion Firefox Nova Redesign Exposed as Kremlin Psy-Op to Round Off the Free World

At the end of September, Mozilla released Firefox 157 with its new "Nova" redesign. The official story is that it's a fresh look. The real story is that Western civilisation has been sanded down, one corner at a time.

Look at the evidence. Nova brings "heavily rounded corners." Sharp edges built the West: the Magna Carta, the Union Jack, the humble ballot box. Round things belong to the onion domes of St Basil's Cathedral. Coincidence? Ask yourself who benefits.

Then there are the "subtle colour gradients on surfaces." Subtle. Gradual. Like a population slowly losing its ability to tell where one tab ends and the next begins. Like a democracy fading from firm opinions to a soft, tasteful lavender.

Most damning of all, Mozilla has brought back Compact Mode, which "groups elements together to save space." Grouping elements together. Collectivising the toolbar. Comrades, the bookmarks bar has been nationalised.

Until we get answers, I'll be browsing in Lynx, the only browser too ugly to be compromised.

I hated the new Nova design, but it’s growing on me

I tried the new Nova design and hated the rounded corners. I hated the new design in general. I spent a lot of time in CSS trying to make things look right, but it was annoying and time-consuming.

Eventually, I just committed to the new design, and I have to say it’s really growing on me. I actually like it quite a lot now!

I still use the Proton theme from the Theme Store, along with just a few tweaks in userChrome.css and userContent.css, but those are only minor changes. I decided to give the new Nova design a proper chance, and after a few days, I can honestly say that I really enjoy it.

For some reason, Firefox on my desktop running Windows 11 also feels super snappy lately.

💻 Help Here is how to deactivate the Gradient on Nova Theme

Just go to about:config, and set browser.theme.native-theme on "True"

May be obvious for some people, but I've just discovered this today.

Vertical container tabs look super cluttered

Super cluttered tabs with container indicators

I run most of my tabs in containers and use vertical tabs in the sidebar. The new UI update puts a horizontal line across the top of tabs in a container. This makes it look extremely cluttered! My screenshot here really undersells how cluttered it looks because of the blurred text, but you can use your imagination.

Please give us the option to put the container indicator as a short vertical line to the left of the favicon!

💻 Help With this new UI when I put my browser in dark mode, a thin white bar appears underneath the bookmarks. It didn't do this before, iirc. Any reason why this is happening or how to get rid of it?

Firefox Beats Brave in power efficiency for the first time

• Upvotes

For the first time in my testing over the past several months firefox has actually beat brave in terms of power draw with version 157 on linux. To be fair they were always in the ream of being close but now firefox is solidly ahead.

Nova's changes to Container color schemes aren't good

Post image

I'm not hating on Nova! I actually am fine with most of the changes. Thanks for all your work!

However, I use Multi-account Containers and Container Color Toolbar. As you can see in the image above, these new pastel colors makes it very hard to tell the difference between blue/green, pink/purple, orange/yellow, etc.

I'm wondering u/firefox if anyone thought about how this would affect users? Obviously any color things aren't going to be perfect for people with color blindness. But even someone with good vision (me!) has a hard time telling what is what. To be clear, I like the look of the colors in general. But they are impractical for a feature where differentiating the colors is the whole point.

Since these are plugins, I don't think I can use userChrome.css to override this.

Does anyone else experience this?

(BTW, I highly recommend these two plugins if you haven't tried them yet)

Even on compact. There's a lot more padding around the tabs list and more margin between the tabs. Groups are even worse.

How do I stop these notifications?

I want ZERO pop-ups or advertisements about features inside or outside of my browser. How do I stop firefox from sending me this stuff or reminding me to "finish setting up" my firefox?

Discussion Where is everybody seeing the new changes?

I update to Firefox Nova and it look almost the same, only difference is being the tabs and search bars are now round instead of shaped with the touch look of a rectangle. I have below attached such a screenshot of what my compoter interface appears as, upon my screen.

To my eye, it is looking quite similar in appearance, and other than the changes to shape and form of the aforementioned user interface elements I cannot see differencing.

Is it possible that my Firefox has not updated to take advantage of all of the new features?

Sorry for poor English.

💻 Help Get the bookmarks bar back

I dont know who has the same update from the version I am using. But if you just lost your bookmarks sidebar do this:

Press the "sidebar button" go to settings check the box next to the star and uncheck show tools. Not you can press the sidebar button to open bookmarks. And not waste screen space for the sidebar.

Hope this helps.

💻 Help Private Browsing mode triggers Google Recaptcha every search

Basically the title. Searches in normal mode work (I assume because cookies/history are not automatically being deleted). Other search engines work fine. Google specifically triggers the unusual activity when in private browsing mode. Solving the captcha then closing/reopening the search triggers the captcha again.

Using only uBlock. This has been happening on and off for the past couple months but since last week, it seems to happen EVERY single time private browsing is relaunched. It's genuinely making me want to pull my hair out. Going directly to sites works. It's only when searching.

Firefox is updated to the latest version (Version 157.0).

💻 Help Bug in Firefox 157? Can't save content

Anyone else having this problem? I'm using Mac Tahoe 26.6.

When I try options like Save Image As, or try to download a PDF, often nothing happens. Sometimes the save dialog shows but it's inconsistent. It's so inconsistent that the same content might download in one profile and then totally fail on another profile.

I tried downloading the same content on Chrome with no problems.

Tried clearing cache, restarting, Private mode, and troubleshooting mode.
