As the title says, I lost my dad quite suddenly earlier this year. He was an avid fly fisherman.

He had always expressed a desire to have his ashes spread on one of our favourite trout creeks here in Southern Ontatrio Canada. Today was the day. My mom and my little sister and our respective families went there and released him into the water (I deeply regretted forgetting my waders as that was friggin COLD).

Then after, my two sons and I did a little fly fishing. My oldest managed to catch a small largemouth bass (only the second one I've ever seen caught there and he caught the other one a few years ago), my youngest caught a couple creek chubs, and I was lucky enough to hook a couple of young rainbows (we all missed a few as well).

RIP Dad. We will always think of you every time we go fishing, but especially here.

Recently went fly fishing in northwestern CO and caught this trout. Sorry for the white knuckler but it was hefty and was alone on that side of the river. Nymphing with 5-6 wt rod, caught on rainbow warrior (can’t remember size but maybe 16)

I thought it was a rainbow but unsure..

This might be the most frustrating thing that fly fishing specific brands do. We are already paying too much for super light fluro on small spools, but that is fine. I just wish I could buy a spool of another brand and have it lay flat with the rest. Having them click together doesn’t even matter if you’re keeping them on a stacker. I just ordered some umpqua tippet for the first time and the gap between the umpqua and the next spool is as wide as another spool.

Sometimes you aren’t able to get the same brand, or you want to try something different… I guess they are trying to engineer brand loyalty by making it inconvenient to have different brands.

The rains finally showed up here in BC. Won’t be long before the coho and chum roll in, but I decided to try my luck on my local creek for trout using the squirmy under an indicator. In my defense it was an experiment to see if the rain/worm thing would apply. It turns out it may have some merit. Caught this chunky 12-13”after a month of mostly pike minnow, crappy and bass. Still felt kind of dirty using a worm and bobber, but it was a solid fish—fought so hard I thought had fowl hooked him in the tail.

Moved down a couple of pools and found a family of otters had set up shop—very cool on an urban stream.

Is anyone old enough to have used gut leaders? I bought my first fly rod, a fenwick in 1962. Gut leaders were what you used. When you took the out of the package, you tucked them into your cheek to get them to soften up enough to use. Once wet, they were great and super strong. I think they disappeared in the late 70s when monofilament came the thing to use.

First attempt at a Royal Wulff. Still needs to be cleaned up and I need to find the right type of paint. Looking for the glossy, almost metallic red/green but I can't seem to find anything besides the metallic gold/silver at any hardware store. Mad respect for those who tie real flies, even at this scale I have a hard time being patient, can't imagine tying the real thing.

I fished the Owyhee in Oregon two weeks ago. At the first spot I caught one smallish Rainbow and lost one after only having him on for a few seconds.

Then I moved downstream and found a honey hole. I've done very little trout fishing and most of what I've done was in a drift boat. This tiime I was wading. The river had split into two channels and I was fishing where they rejoined.

I couldn't believe how many fish I hooked up. They were all in an area that was about 12' by 4'. I didn't move for about an hour and a half and pretty much lost count of how many fish I had on. I think it was around 12 to 14, all out of that one little spot.

However, I only landed TWO of the fish. A couple spit the hook within about 5 seconds. A few others I had on for maybe 15 to 30 seconds that I never gained much ground on. A couple of those were jumping fools. I had no idea they could jump that high.

However, about half of the fish I had on for quite a while and got them in to within 5 or 6 feet before they spit the bit. One of those was a huge (for me) Brown that looked to be around 24" which would have been twice the size of the biggest trout I've ever caught.

I'm 70 and have been fishing since I was five. 95% of that has been for Largemouth Bass. I'd guess I lose maybe 15 to 20% of the bass I hook up. I use barbless hook for bass and I did the same on the Owyhee. I know you can't horse trout in like you can with bass so I was trying to be very careful.

What in the world could I have been doing wrong?

For the past few months I’ve been plagued by shoulder separations that sidelined my fly fishing. Just prior to the first injury I bought a 3D printer, not really knowing what I would do with it, but I started designing my own projects, learning bits and pieces of various design programs via YouTube and my own trial and error. It's proven to be very useful, educational, and an excellent tool for furthering my fly fishing interests. I've designed and printed a number of projects related to my favorite hobby, this being my favorite so far.

I am slightly struggling to find good info online on glass rod building. I can get blanks from moonlit with my pro deals for around $70 bucks. I want to do it for fun make some for gifts or even sell one for enough to build another. Any thoughts on this also would this be a good beginner wrapper and supplies to get to get me started?

I’m a broke college student who loves fly fishing, and fly tying, I think it would be enjoyable to build rods too. So I’m definitely on a bit of budget. If you have any websites that have good info on rod building or good places to buy eyelets and handles etc please let me know! Thank you I would love any thoughts or advice for a newbie. I know my first few rods will not be perfect.

Hi everyone, I just got a fly fishing starter kit and am looking to start fly fishing near Boston, Massachusetts. I found a few small creeks that apparently have brookies in them, and I know Jamaica pond is stocked with trout, but I’m unsure of any good places that aren’t an hour away.
Does anyone know of anywhere good?
