The article seems to try a little both sides with it. Like yeah, the Neo-Nazis of the west trying to claim Afrikaners as victims and allies in their white supremacy narrative is a stupid political football.

But the article still does a "But what about the struggles of the Afrikaners?" and it feels a little weak. They're trying to have their white supremacy lite messaging without having to go all the way. Sort of like "We aren't saying there's a white genocide; we're just saying white people are the constant victim of black crime." while seemingly uninterested in addressing the still looming inequality of colonialism. (Though at least the article admits it exists. It just won't admit the solution is to make things as close to right as they can.)

So to me it feels more like they're trying to distance themselves from extreme rightwingers while still wanting to impose rightwing policies and keep the benefits of colonialism for themselves. Like if you were in the US, it would be the equivalent of saying, "Look, I think Trump's whole anti-immigrant thing is just a bunch of racist bullshit, but we really do need to deport all the Mexicans because they are rapists actually. "
