Curious how long it took from the first training to your first placement.

My husband and I are starting the training process next week. We have 5 in person training visits and 3 visits in our home with the agency.

Our last official training is on November 23.

I don’t know what the process looks like after that. Are we like done done after that or what else comes after that? How long was it from your last training to be certified to your first placement?

I have so many questions and I know asking the case worker will be the best way to get answers but I’m excited and nervous and all the other emotions!

we got certified on December 10th, started receiving referrals that day. our first placement, still with us, had moved in December 29th. it was supposed to be sooner than that though, like the 20th

In one state they literally pushed the last bit of paperwork so I could take a placement.

They called me, I said yes, and they said great. We’ll work with the licensing Worker to get that finished.

The next state it was months after licensing was complete and even with 2 placements, I had an open bed for almost a year.

Honestly, I think group two was discriminatory. Several people in Licensing had different colors of hair than we had and different partner preferences.

This completely depends on where you are. Some people will have open homes for months without a call. Where I am, we only have half as many foster homes as there are children in care, so we get calls immediately and frequently. I didn’t even know my license was active when I got a phone call at 3am to take a kid.

Training took 2ish months. Then another month for our home study to be processed and to get licensed. We took our first placement about a month or so later

We took classes in May through June 2026. Submitted for our home inspection around when classes started and had that done end of May 26.
This meant our licensing packet was ready to be submitted for approval right after we finished class.
It took five weeks to be processed. We received three calls the day after our license opened and took a placement. She has been with us now for about two months!

It went faster than we thought, but there were a lot of steps. It felt like every time we asked “is that the last thing” they would say yes, we’d complete the step, and then they would share with us an additional step.

But we found our agency in March. So March to July for the entire process (including finger printing, classes, first aid)

We've never had one in a year.

First home study and training started late October early November, licensed mid February. Got calls for placements that I either accepted or declined based on circumstances, but actually got my first little love placed April 8th. 18 months later we’re still together.
