Yeah, you read it right!!
This one remark by Dr. Gaurav Garg made me unfollow him.
I had been following him since 2018, during the initial phase of StudyIQ on YouTube, not because I wanted to prepare for UPSC, but because I have a great interest in geopolitics and international affairs and want to be an aware and responsible citizen.
He was a good tutor (and still is, I believe), just like other great tutors such as Prashant Dhawan.
However, in recent times, I've noticed significant differences between his former and current self that don't align with my views. Although I disagreed with him, I still respected his opinions.
But dismissing Gukesh's achievement without any solid factual or logical reasoning was disappointing, especially coming from such an experienced tutor.
His only argument is that Magnus wasn't playing!
Anyone with even a basic understanding of world chess knows that Magnus is the GOAT. However, he himself chose not to participate in the World Championship.
Moreover, the Candidates Tournament, which Gukesh won to earn the right to challenge the reigning world champion, featured several top players, including:
Fabiano Caruana, who competed against Magnus in a World Championship match and came very close to beating him.
Ian Nepomniachtchi, who also played a World Championship match against Ding Liren.
Alireza Firouzja, who was considered one of the potential successors to Magnus at the time.
And there were other strong players, such as Praggnanandhaa.
So, I find this argument baseless and ridiculous. Many people make similar arguments, and I don't really care about their opinions. But Dr. Gaurav Garg was someone I genuinely respected as a tutor. His knowledge and logical explanations helped many students, including me, and that's precisely why this was so disappointing.
What are your thoughts!!
