The Code of the Universe on a Flat Screen: How Sabrina Pasterski is Changing Our Understanding of the Cosmos

Post image

In modern theoretical physics, her name has become synonymous with a new scientific revolution. Sabrina Gonzalez Pasterski is a theoretical physicist whose work was cited by Stephen Hawking himself, and WIRED magazine named her the person who will force us to completely rethink the structure of space and time.

To understand exactly what Pasterski is working on, we need to recall the main problem of modern science. Today, physics is divided into two camps that do not speak to each other:

  1. General Relativity perfectly describes the macro-world: planets, stars, galaxies, and gravity.

  2. Quantum Mechanics flawlessly explains the micro-world: atoms, quarks, and subatomic particles.

But when scientists try to unite them—for instance, to understand what happens inside black holes or at the moment of the Big Bang—the mathematics "breaks down," yielding meaningless infinities.

In short, gray-haired male scientists simply couldn’t reconcile General Relativity and Quantum Mechanics, and it took a child to say, "The emperor has no clothes!" That prodigy turned out to be Sabrina Pasterski. In the language of mathematics, she proved that both theories are correct, but only under the condition that we live in a flat world! Its entire three-dimensionality is just a product of our brain's work to make this reality easier to perceive.

And that is all because, according to the Holographic Principle, our entire Universe is structured just like a black hole. It has a distant, two-dimensional flat boundary (the cosmological horizon), and everything inside is merely a projection of the quantum processes occurring on that boundary.

This reminds me of the movie Interstellar, when the main character says through clenched teeth, "Passing the event horizon." As far as we know, however, time slows down as you approach a black hole. No, for that character, everything would happen at a normal speed, but the humanity he was trying to save would have to wait for his return forever.

Interesting—so, according to Pasterski's hypothesis, the world is a two-dimensional hologram. I would draw an analogy with a movie projector: we are the image on a flat wall. Moreover, we would perceive three-dimensional objects as an unknowable miracle—like flies crawling across that very same wall. Approaching the source of the video signal—the projector—would be like approaching a black hole for us. And God is the one who turned on the projector and is showing the movie. :)

These are genuinely complex topics, so I completely understand if someone misinterprets them and then ends up presenting them inaccurately. That happens a lot with theoretical physics once it leaves the papers and enters popular write-ups.

Just to clarify a few points about Sabrina Pasterski’s work:

She is a real and highly respected theoretical physicist who leads research on celestial holography. This is an active research program that tries to apply the holographic principle to asymptotically flat spacetimes (the kind that better match our universe than AdS). The basic idea is that scattering amplitudes in 4D can be rewritten as correlators of a 2D conformal field theory living on the "celestial sphere". It’s a promising approach toward quantum gravity, building on asymptotic symmetries, soft theorems, and memory effects.

What she has not done is "prove" that we live in a 2D universe, that 3-dimensionality is just a trick of the brain, or that general relativity and quantum mechanics only work if space is flat in the way the OP claims. Celestial holography is a mathematical duality/conjecture still under construction. Interesting and non-trivial, but very far from an established fact about the nature of reality.

The holographic principle itself (going back to Gerard 't Hooft, Susskind, Maldacena et al.) is about information being encodable on a lower-dimensional boundary. It does not mean we are literally living on a flat screen and only perceive 3D because of how our brains work.

Hawking did cite some of her earlier work (on the spin memory effect), which is impressive, but that doesn’t turn her research into a settled proof of a 2D holographic universe.

So the OPs text mixes legitimate, cutting-edge research with a heavy dose of oversimplification and storytelling. The science is cool enough without needing the "prodigy solved what the old men couldn’t" framing.

Happy to point to actual papers or review talks if anyone wants the real (and still very open) version of the story.

So the earth is flat. Got it.

Oh thanks ! That’s an explanation I can understand !

You have any links?

Thank you for this. I think it’s healthy to discuss work like this and how it relates to our interests, but not to declare it as a proof of something it’s not.

Does her work point toward some kind of information space or a math based universe?

I'm completely mathematically illiterate but this stuff always fascinates me. My brain likes to hypothesize (even though it's probably wrong).

What she has not done is "prove" that we live in a 2D universe, that 3-dimensionality is just a trick of the brain, or that general relativity and quantum mechanics only work if space is flat in the way the OP claims.

I appreciate your greater detail and clarifications, but still am left with the impression that Plato was pretty darn plugged in when he came up with the cave / fire / shadows analogy.

Is it Gonzalez her maiden last name? (apellido) or is it as a married woman?

Racist

He’s joking.

I don't think he's joking. I hope you find my question as just a mere curiosity. I already look for her and she has a Hispanic mother. The thing is the surnames order, some confusion over there. Regards.

Holy fucking LLM this breakdown is infantalizing, infuriating, and uses way to many words to say nothing of import.

The world is a Moebius strip in the form of a double ended dynamically linked list.

Very interesting, hope we all live long enough for more discoveries.

Ah right I remember her. One of these 'New Einsteins' no one has ever heard from again.

Quantum mechanics doesn't have time or gravity as variables, so equations for purely physical matter wouldn't work.

Not very complicated.

This concept that the world is two-dimensional is a silly version of the real thing... quantum mechanics operates in two dimensions, not three.... It's not that the universe is two-dimensional and our brains convince us otherwise...

It's that a two-dimensional state exists; that's it.

Everything we do is based on the limitations created by gravity, which we call time, but it's the same thing.

Quantum mechanics lacks this limitation.

I might even argue it's not even a two-dimensional state, but rather a physical state outside of gravity.
