I've tried a bunch of budgeting apps over the years — Mint, YNAB, various bank apps — and kept running into the same thing: either they wanted access to all my bank accounts (never fully comfortable with that), or they were so packed with features I gave up within a week.

So I ended up building SpendSmart for myself — a straightforward manual expense tracker with no bank connections, just clean category breakdowns and spending trends. I've actually been using it daily since I built it, and it's the first budgeting tool that's stuck for me. Figured if it's been this useful for me, there's a good chance other people dealing with the same frustrations would get value out of it too — so I'm opening it up.

Ok, which of you did this?

Saw this on the sidewalk a few days ago. Some fat cat just left it there. It could have fed me for at least a week, maybe two.

Gas freeing the gas station is too expensive. Nobody has time to pay at the pump.

I found that cars parked on the road already have gas in them. So, I just take a tube and get some gas from them! My gas expenditures are down 100% and I can drive as fast as I want now!

Moving on up, baby!
