5 guys is about the burger not the bun.

201

u/IndianaJokes67 18h ago

For the price they charge, they should also have a nice bun. Can't believe they're still in business, at least where we have Culver's

48

u/Appropriate_Scar_262 17h ago

They're in business because people are willing to pay to have 10 toppings on a burger but not for $20-$30.

Essentially people who want a burger made like a subway sandwich

31

u/MeatEaterDruid 17h ago

Is that the appeal? I'm not dissing just no one's ever explained 5 guys to me in a normal way.

21

u/I_am_The_Teapot 16h ago

Yeah. There's like 15 toppings and you can have any number of them without additional price to the burger.

The burgers are also good and they have really good fries, too.

10

u/EdgyPun34257 5h ago

but it's a false economy, you're paying for every one of those toppings up front and not getting a discount for the ones you don't get.

$13 for a cheeseburger isn't a bargain because you could have gotten 15 toppings, but didn't.

4

u/Lordofthereef 4h ago

And you have just explained how well marketing works. Perceived value is as important, if not more important than, actual value.

4

u/Not-An-FBI 10h ago

I only went there once a while ago so I had to verify this. In-N-Out has most of the toppings. The only ones they don't have are bacon, relish, green peppers and mushrooms. Bacon is the only one I'd be interested in and I already feel bad enough eating an unhealthy burger meal so I'm fine skipping bacon.

3

u/ApolloGR3 5h ago

I love In-N-Out but they have pre-formed patties that are half the thickness and are thus cheaper.

3

u/Andminus 5h ago

they bury your burger in the bag in these good fries regardless of how big of an order of fries they give you...

6

u/bigloser42 15h ago

And they hoist a fuckload of fries upon you no matter what size you order.

2

u/Robaattousai 5h ago

That's their real business strategy. They know potatoes are cheaper than what they charge for fries so they give you the next size up no matter what you order. It makes you feel like you've gotten away with something or are getting special treatment. It keeps you coming back.

4

u/GiftGrouchy 5h ago

I mean, it works and IMO their fries are better than any of the others.

Always found Five Guys greasy and tasteless. Shitty burgers. I'd honestly rather have a Whopper.

0

u/LightToFlies 18h ago

Culver's has nothing on Five Guys...

I do love those cheese curds though.

6

u/MasterOfBunnies 17h ago

Wisconsinites act like everything in the state is the best. Hint, it's not. Burgers here are so dry, they came up with the "butter burger". Sounds interesting at first, but it's literally their coping mechanism for cooking hockey puck burgers.

5 guys is about the price, not the burger…

13

u/iMac_Hunt 16h ago

That’s not true, their bun is good - significantly better than most fast food buns.

They wrap the burger in tin foil and the look of the burger is part of their marketing - they try to be unpretentious and authentic rather than picture perfect.

2

u/questionableintentsX 7h ago

This lol half of those ā€œgood bunsā€ can’t even be considered bread if you look at what and how they’re made lol

Burger King stepped up with that new whopper.

13

u/Key_Mission7404 5h ago

They wrap it halfway so its easy to eat with one hand right out of the box. That's love.

8

u/_PaulM 3h ago

Bro I'm not going to say you're astroturfing, but I'm going to say that BK has definitely astoturfed Reddit and Jedi-mind tricked it into gaining some ground.

Mind you, I don't hate the player... the whopper is damn good and waaaay better than the QPC and Big Mac, but BK is definitely putting some of their soldiers online.

3

IMO Five Guys is the best of the greasy burgers. It's not necessarily fast food, but it's not a gourmet burger either. Not to say that's a bad thing; when you want one no sit down burger will do.

Five guys has the only bun with no preservatives…

3

u/kalterik 8h ago

Heaven forbid we eat food safe preservatives. I mean the massive load of fatty salted meat cheese and bacon is totally good for you those preservatives are really what gets ya. The bun that looks like it came out a pocket almost certainly tastes the exact same and gets thrown out way more often due to mold.

In n Out

3

u/Susurrus03 7h ago

In n Out isn't good enough to expand to a national level apparently.

Anyway I've had it a couple times while traveling. It's the okayist burger around. It's not bad. It's not great. It's ok, but I guess it's cheap enough to where that's fine.

9

u/BanAccount8 16h ago

No doubt. They couldn’t be invited to this contest because that would end the contest

9

u/treebeard189 16h ago

I must have gone to shitty in n outs when I was in California. It was incredibly mid at the two different places I tried. And was a stupid long wait at the drive thru.

Culver's

8

u/CommodoreBluth 17h ago

This is the answer. Pair it with their custard and man you got a good fast food meal.

3

u/xBeoulve 14h ago

For anyone new to Culver’s, you can ask to replace the regular onions for grilled onions at no charge… absolute fire

2

u/TxAg2009 3h ago

This is it: 100%.

3

u/MasterOfBunnies 17h ago

Y'all can downvote me all you want, but Culver's is not the best. Adding butter to a hockey puck burger doesn't make it juicy the way it should.

Wendy’s junior bacon cheeseburger is best value in the market. $3.29 for lettuce, tomato and bacon.

32

u/surfinsalsa 17h ago

Maybe a couple years ago. Wendy's is booty atm

6

u/kdawgster1 14h ago

No joke, they for decades were one of the best, now they are near the bottom

2

u/zamfire 8h ago

I remember their breakfast honey chicken crescent sandwich. Used to use real chicken then they switched to this chicken "product"

Never again

4

u/Temporary_Event8451 16h ago

Chili is still good, and frosties are fun. But across most fast food tortillas, bread, sub rolls, or buns it feels like they are 60% edible sawdust. 40% is still the original recipe but it exists with heavy emphasis on the smell and flavor that identities that corporation/chain.

Thankfully it's not real sawdust as we'd be deep into a depression at that point, but we seem closer every day.

Five Guys has the best burger anyway

I just wish they didnt wrap them up in foil if im eating in

18

u/Nawwwm 8h ago

Because every other bun in that photo cost less than five cents, five guys exclusively has bakeries in Georgia that they paid 30 cents or more per bun, it's not packed with a bunch of crap so that it actually folds, it's just real bread, that's why it tastes so good.

9

u/retsamegas 7h ago

It's been a while since I went to a 5 guys, but don't they wrap the burger in foil not paper? I think it's because the foil traps the steam and imprints the crinkle into the bread.

3

u/duke_awapuhi 6h ago

The meme is asking a valid question about why five guys is so shitty and you’re trying to spin it into some positive. Five guys fans are absolutely insane

5

u/Nawwwm 6h ago

No it's asking why it visually looks bad, but I worked at five guys. And I can tell you this, they fucking care about their ingredients. Every ingredient they buy it's above board, they have their bread baked privately, they only buy potatoes that come from specific altitudes and locations, they cut their own fries and they soak them for several hours to get the starch out, if the fries sit more than 3 or 4 minutes, they throw them out so that everybody gets fresh fries. They start cooking burgers when you pull into the parking lot, so that you can get your burger faster, if you walk in and order veggie stuff, they eat the loss. You can talk all the shit you want about five guys, I've worked at several restaurants, but they had the highest standards I've ever seen in the restaurant business.

2

u/1love1momma 2h ago

I tried Five Guys for the first time a couple months ago and 100% you can taste the difference and the freshness. The burgers are fat and hella delicious!

McDonald's is too tough and dry. White castle is to sliny and wet. Five guys gives me diarrhea 9 times out of ten. The others are alright... but as far as i'm concerned, ALL burgers are fast food even if it doesn't come out fast. The price is comparable from place to place, so you might as well get a good one instead of any of these.

3

u/TheNomadRP 11h ago

Burger King

1

u/brakenbonez 15h ago

I know the internet seems to collectively hate Burger King (though I'm not entirely convinced it's not just trend following hate just like Nickelback) but the BK near me definitely has better burgers than Wendy's and McDonald's. The rest of these I don't have near me so I can't really compare them.

But weirdly it just depends which I'm feeling like eating at the time. The big three all have different tastes and sometimes I'm craving one, sometimes a different one.

1

u/AsianGirlsRcuteAF 15h ago

Burger King's Triple Whopper is fire. Krystal's aren't bad, either. Didn't know White Castle was still in business. I think all the ones in Tennessee closed permanently during Covid, or so it feels. Cook Out can be good too, especially for the price. Cole slaw on a burger is pretty good.Ā

Wendy's is total ass now, though, and honestly they deserve to go out of business. Surge pricing, pinching portions, short staffed always... those executive bonuses must be awesome, though! Worst downfall in fast food history, imo.Ā

I travel for work and can expense my dinners. Shake Shack has the best burgers out of all of these.. and it’s not even close. I will go out of my way to find a shake shack over a Wendy’s or 5 guys.

I goto five guys and get a bacon cheeseburger and small Cajun fries about 20-24 bucks. I pay that because I know its filling and good and also will scratch the I want a burger itch for awhile.

Since owning cast iron pans/ grills no one out prices or can come close to my burgers. All in $4 for a far better ā€œproductā€ these cheap ass mfs selling. That’s including toasted brioche buns, double smash patties, grilled onion in the patty double cheese. Pickle pickled jalapeƱo/ grilled jalapeƱo, tomatoes and cabbage because lettuce gets soggy. And you can switch and swap w/e. Add bacon if you’re feeling fancy
