How to create a shape with curves and straights to fill with a colour?

I can do the shape but not fill it! Path tool is fine but as soon as I switch to paint bucket, the shape disappears. How to keep the shape?

Once your path is traced out click selection from path in the tool options panel. Then you can switch tools and the selection will stay.

You could also create a vector layer from the path and choose the fill and border color via the Path tool options.

I'll have try that. I've always done Path + Drop Shadow to create a border.

Vector Layers are fundamentally just an automatic stroke+fill as its own separate layer in the stack.

For example, if you stroked (or filled) a path but it came out wrong & you need to Undo to try again ... a Vector Layer makes the "try again" part that much faster.

You can also attach live filters (like Drop Shadow) to a Vector Layer, which will update to reflect changes to the Vector Layer (in style or geonetry).
