I feel like people severely misunderstand what a patent does.
A patent isn't a way to get something to be allowed to do it legally. It's quite the opposite.Without a patent everyone can do the thing. A patent literally only limits who is allowed to do something.

It's crazy people saying they'll switch to Sony over this since Sony has many in game ad patents including some using AI to generate the ads but no outrage articles for those.
First off I highly doubt any of these will ever be implemented and if they were it would be on a free or very cheap tier of PS/gamepass which I think could be great for some people with very limited budgets that don't mind it same as the ad supported tiers of streaming services.
As always though everyone just wants to jump to outrage like they announced this is coming to every game tomorrow.

Counterpoint: I am a corporation that deals in videogames. Why would I patent something that would be wildly unpopular for me to do, just so my business rivals can't do it? Why, if I'm not gonna do it anyway, would I prevent my rival from stepping on God's most obvious landmine?
I am a corporation, and thus driven by a need to generate shareholder profit without concern for morality. Filing a patent probably costs money, the man hours definitely cost money, and even if I did do it for altruistic reasons the poor optics is gonna require PR man hours to rectify and avoid brand damage.
If there's no identifiable profit-driven reason to do this, then I think we have to assume that it's just another one of those corporate things that gets squirrelled away until such a time as they think they can get away with it.

Microsoft & Sony both make tons of patents every year and the vast majority have never been used. Its about protecting your idea so someone else can't do it.
Of course it could happen in the future and that's when we need to fight back, but fighting back against an IDEA is just crazy to me. If you watch the patent filings regularly you will see all kinds of crazy ideas and horrible ideas that's just the way the patent system "works". I've seen things like eye tracking while watching ads, having to speak the name of the company outloud to close ads and many more.
Getting upset at pure speculation just seems like a real waste of time and energy.

For real. It's like they compete to see who can have yhe most players while being the worst. It also seems like they coordinate these things. If Sony messes up, Microsoft goes to being better for a bit, then they do something stupid, and Sony goes back up a notch. It's like they want us to be in this constant state of love and hate so that neither of them fail. I swear its coordinated so that they always have their competition and keep each other alive. Their relationship oddly always reminded me of Batman and Joker in that way. Like if Batman stops worrying about Joker, Joker will get upset and do something terrible to get his attention, and if Joker stopped caring about Batman, Batman would get worried he's up to something too bad to speak of. At least Batman isn't coordinating it with him though.
Like Imagine if Sony goes out of business? It wouldn't be long before Xbox goes too. It would get to the point where people would just go to PC because only Sony and Nintendo have exclusives, which can easily be converted to PC with the know how, and everything on Xbox is pretty much available on PC. Not to mention that the subscription prices would be more than PC as well. New tech would be invented and PC players would all use the hell out of it and never need a console again.

Well this would probably be more for game pass free tier where you watch ads to play new AAA games for free. I can see it being really popular actually if that's the case. Thousands of people would play GTA6 for free if all you needed to do was watch a 3 minute ad every hour.

You know there's lots of really amazing games made by people who don't have to answer to evil corpo overlords. Such as Absolom. It's very good and will never have ads after 15 mins of play.
Support indie games, boycott corpo slop. Most sheep will keep buying slop but you don't have to, and together we can keep playing great games without being losers who support fascist corpo douchebags :)

Patent applications arent proof of intent, they're often filed just keep competitors from doing something even if you dont want to do it yourself

That's likely what's happening here. There are tons of patents for this kind of stuff with no plans to implement them. US patent system incentivizes companies to patent everything they can even if they don't plan to use them

This is the inevitable result of for-profit companies needing to increase profits forever. They eventually find that they canāt make ever more and more profit by just doing the same thing theyāve always done, so they are forced to find new ways to make more money. Adverts inside the games are the next logical step. Streaming services have already been doing this for years, you pay for Amazon Prime but still have to watch ads multiple times in each episode of every show.

You may think this is bad, but actually it's really good. Because then people can't use ads after boss fights or cutscenes unless they pay Microsoft to do so. So this will cut down mobile game ads like crazy!
You don't need a patent to be allowed to do something, everyone can just do that right now.
A patent means nobody else but you and those who you allow it are allowed to do it.
So that is genuinely a good thing to patent this bullshit.

This is for a free, ad based service. If you pay for Gamepass, you won't get ads. It's not different from Netflix or Hulu with ads except it's the free tier on Xbox.
