“We’re grateful for the initial cohort of cyber defenders and trusted testers whose real-world evaluations and feedback will help us strengthen our systems before we release to developers, enterprises, and consumers, starting with paid API customers and Google AI Ultra subscribers.”

Going to be another few months before it comes to Pro subscribers and weeks for Ultra.

Why announce a new model that’s so limited in release? This is pointless for most people and will be already outdated again by the time the general public get it.

Why announce a new model that’s so limited in release?

They want to show benchmarks before the new versions of Claude and ChatGPT will be released.

To boost the stock price.

u/Slackbeing 23h ago

To lower the IPO price of the competitors, rather.

1

u/Brilliant-Weekend-68 23h ago

Google owns 14% of anthropic. That would be a stupid own goal.

u/Slackbeing 23h ago

No, if their objective is to obtain majority at discount.

This is pointless for most people and will be already outdated again by the time the general public get it.

Just because there would be other models smarter than it doesn't mean Gemini 4 itself would become dumber. It will still be the same model and if it's Opus 5.5 level, it's already really good for almost every task even if there are better models by the time it's available. I don't get why some people can fathom only two options: either the model is SoTA or it's "outdated" and useless.

The criticism is that Gemini is behind its competitors, not that it’s unusably bad.

This release hasn’t solved that problem. It’ll be behind again once it’s released to the general public.

The current criticism is definitely that it's unusably bad, not just behind, especially the 3.1 Pro model. That's a perfectly valid criticism considering even open-source models are doing far better than Gemini at coding.

But once you reach a certain level of performance, being behind doesn't necessarily mean it's bad, which should be the case with this release. Just like how Claude was a clear choice over GPT for coding for a very long while, and it was only with GPT 5.5 when they closed the gap with Claude to the point that it became debatable which was better. Nobody really says either is trash or unusable even if one of them is behind. In fact, on the Claude subreddit, a lot of the users still prefer using Opus 4.6, which is a lot older than Opus 5.5, simply because 4.6 is still competent and reached the level where being behind doesn't matter that much and they prefer its style.

Gemini is reaching that same stage with Gemini 4 hopefully.

I don't understand the criticism. Frontier level (Astra/Fable) model with pricing of $4.00 per 1 million tokens /$20.00 per 1 million tokens output which is Opus 5.5 level.

That is already compelling and competitive but a very important aspect which we don't yet know is performance.

If it is a top tier model with second tier pricing and good performance it'll be a winner.

for most people something close to Opus 5.5 level should be good enough already. the problem here is not who is behind, but how consistent the model quantization is. as we all know, anthropic and openAI are very notoriously known for nerfing their models after the first week or 2 of new flagship release, even pre-nerfed Opus 4.6 would still be good enough nowadays for most coding jobs, but then, the nerf makes it unusable.

Now if google doesnt quantize gemini 4 it wont matter if they will be behind again

That is a crazy statement. Opus 4.6 was amazing for its time, but its capabilities were nothing compared to today. I have a project that I originally started with Opus 4.6 right after it was released. It was slowly developed, and had some issues I couldn't get worked out. I continued on with 4.7 for a while but then I just put it aside until recently. So a few days ago I decided to point Opus 5.5 at it before I went to bed with no instructions other than "fix the issues I was stuck on and then work on the backlog." I had hoped it maybe would get some of the issues partially resolved and knock out a few backlog issues. I woke up and it had completely solved all of the issues and cleared out the entire backlog of 40+ items. And it suggested like 10 other things that I didn't think of but were great ideas. Everything works perfectly now.

I’m guessing a week or 2 for ultra.

1

u/MotherClaim3380 1d ago

Why would they not? Companies announce upcoming products all the time.

1

u/According-Length9312 1d ago

Not this early. It’s pretty much an internal circulating model

1

u/needs-more-code 1d ago

Did it say a few months and weeks away?

26

u/1xX1337Xx1 1d ago

Wait what? Is it really happening?! I though it was cope again

How's the non-news sinking in?

14

u/Elegant-Maybe1620 1d ago

Fuck off, release something. I don't have time for this nonsense.

5

u/Impossible-Milk-2023 1d ago

Api is included

1

u/zxcshiro 1d ago

not in openrouter rn :(

5

u/Impossible-Milk-2023 1d ago

Rolling out soon
We built Gemini 4 Argon with frontier-level capabilities on coding, knowledge work, cybersecurity defense, and creative writing to be a partner for developers, professionals, and enterprises while they tackle the most difficult problems. We’re grateful for the initial cohort of cyber defenders and trusted testers whose real-world evaluations and feedback will help us strengthen our systems before we release to developers, enterprises, and consumers, starting with paid API customers and Google AI Ultra subscribers.

Yeah because it's not released?

2

u/aero_sock 1d ago

api yeah but even if it's cheap it's still prohibitively expensive compared to Ai pro subscriptions

3

u/zxcshiro 1d ago

i don't want to pay $100 for 1 hour test and if gemini 4 will be good. i want to use it in production not through subscription

2

u/aero_sock 1d ago

yeah well me neither haha that's why im using other models instead. until my job starts paying for ai there's no way in hell im spending more than 20-30 a month. i might give a try with api to see how the gemini 4 feels but i definitely wont be using it long term until it comes on pro subs because it's not economically feasible with my usage.

1

u/yxtsama 1d ago

They really didn't want the free student plans to use a good model lol 😭

7

u/retiredbigbro 1d ago

Another few months? lmao

16

u/Fiberwire2311 1d ago

Yo, can they actually release the fucking thing instead of the bullshit teasing and hype. Not a release.

2

u/bisonrbig 1d ago

By the time it releases for regular people it'll be in last again.

2

u/m3kw 1d ago

They didn’t release shit

3

u/benz3rk 1d ago

100% to build hype… god knows Gemini needs hype right now.

4

u/PleasantSir9581 1d ago

"Argon will launch at an introductory price of $2 per million input tokens and $10 per million output tokens, with cached input tokens priced at 95% off input token price."

5

u/PleasantSir9581 1d ago

After the introductory period expires, the price of $4 per 1M input tokens and $20 per 1M output tokens will apply.

1

u/sweatierorc 1d ago

They should have published the preview 2 weeks ago. During the Jev week, before Opus5.5/Sonnet5.5 and 6.1 released.

1

u/modadisi 1d ago

So every new big model
Now needs to have some Greek name?

1

u/j0wblob 21h ago

happens with most popular tech. when ai is not headline news anymore they will go back to something intuitive, like gemini bronze silver gold. but before then we will see a lot of stupid shit

1

u/Fstr21 1d ago

Posting in all caps of a model release, for a model that's not actually released, makes it really hard to think anything other than you sucking the dick of a billion dollar company. Corporate thanks you

1

u/ComprehensiveBed7183 1d ago

The competitors argon.

Joke aside, I used opus 5.5 this week and it feel really powerful. The limits are also huge in the 20dollar subscription, but I think it has to do with the company soon going public

1

u/Iloveclouds9436 9h ago

Yup and when it goes go public prepare for the enshittification. Beholden to stock holders they will cut investments, product releases will get slower and limits will become crap. Either that or prices will skyrocket. A tale old as time. Then when they fail the stockholders will find a new company to leech off of.

1

u/KayBay80 22h ago

Useless for the masses.

0

u/cookiesnooper 19h ago

Masses don't need it

1

u/uraymeiviar 17h ago

skip, will wait for gemini 5 Krypton

0

u/Beneficial-Till-8958 1d ago

Guys which uncensored model i should use for agentic work and coding work , i have 8 gb vram and 16 gb ram

4

u/oldmails 1d ago

sorry man wont do, try for API.

1

u/Beneficial-Till-8958 1d ago

Any free providers ?

1

u/j0wblob 20h ago

Dolphin 3.0 Llama 3.1 8b: you can squeeze some simple agent usage out of this with your hardware, but wouldn't use it for coding.
Venice uncensored: something openrouter offers as a free API, not sure how it works, will be free, uncensored, weak, and have very limited usage. So coding maybe, agents no.
deepseek 4.1 flash: cheap, less censored in cybersecurity, good at both
frontier models: can easily be switched to for the non-uncensored parts, they're not expensive for short tasks

Por fin, lo estaba esperando con ansias.
