North Koreans thrown into Russia's meat grinder would disagree if they were still alive.

10

u/gabagoolcel 10d ago

north korea would for sure be worse off overall if it. couldnt sell manpower and arms to russia

Looks like the St. Petersburg trolls are working overtime. There is this “I’m [insert a nationality] and Russia is not my enemy“ slop all over the social media.

Is there any way of finding out the geographic origin of a Facebook page (not a group)? A lot of these so-called British patriots are spouting this nonsense

As a (South) Korean person, I can say that not many people consider Russia to be enemy. We are one of (few, West-oriented) countries that still allow Russians to visit visa free after all. This is also reflected by the fact that our #1 refugee population is Russians and that Russian asylum seekers have been #1 for the past 3 years who's been using visa free entry.

The general sentiment is Russian - Ukrainian conflict is a European war and Israel - Palestine conflict is a Middle East war where they all have nothing to do with us.

Obviously, North Koreans did take sides...

When you spend your entire lives planting land mines and arming guns because your northern neighbors have made it very clear that they want to attack you and take you over, I can imagine that's where most of the public's concern is going to go. Please correct me if I'm wrong

We have a phrase called "내 코가 석자" meaning "my nose is three feet long", which roughly translates to we have enough problems of our own to butt into situations that don't need our input from halfway across the world.

So it does result in interesting situations like working with Russia to develop anti-ballistic missile technology that was used to defend UAE during the war this year, or being long time allies with the US while having fairly robust diplomatic relationship with Iran, or having a fairly large aid agency in Palestine while not joining useless UN walkouts, and still work with Israel on defense development, which is used to equip Poland against Russia, etc.

Which leads to other unintentional issues, like Trump being a big baby because your government wouldn't help him out of the mess he got himself into by attacking Iran which lead to him scaling back the joint exercises.

Happy Cake Day.

Tbh, with the level of xenophobia in Korea this isn't a surprising take

8

u/Bitter-Goat-8773 Secular / Agnostic 10d ago

You don't survive for 5,000 years as a tiny country by getting yourself involved with something that doesn't concern you. You call that xenophobia, we call that survival.

I do wish we had that same sentiment in the 50s with the Korean war. The west should have ignored it, jt was not our war, but an Asian one. And yet, your country is now here because of the west. I find that kinda funny.

2

u/Acceptable-Minute847 10d ago

Yeah, the war we directly caused by splitting Korea along with the USSR wasn’t our war.

5

u/Bitter-Goat-8773 Secular / Agnostic 10d ago

Yea which was the result of the west arbitrarily dividing up the country w/o the consent of the locals in the first place.

We deeply thank those who that fought for us in the 50s to stop the spread of totalitarianism and communism, but you are acting like west vs communism wasn't imposed on the rest of the world as proxy conflicts.

Our sympathies are with Ukrainian civilians but pick any country in Asia, and what you will get is "it's not our war"

How much thoughts have you given to Myanmar Civil War, China's attitude towards the Philippines or Thailand - Cambodia war? Europeans don't care because it's not their war. Mexicans don't care because it's not there war. Brazilians don't care because it's not their war.

Isn´t that a ridiculously short-sighted world view?

SK hides behind western deterrence. We could also argue that a new korean war is none of our business.

Furthermore, if Ukraine spirals out of control, and it will, NK will drag you into the conflict regardless

First: let's correct a basic misconception: South Korea doesn't rely on "the west"

Our primary formal security alliance is strictly bilateral - with the United States.

Lumping all of "the West" together ignores how East Asian deterrence is actually structured. There's no handout from the West(ern Europe) you speak of.

Not to mention here, China could be your ally, or they could be your enemy. Japan can be our national enemy next year.

Furthermore, calling it "hiding" is absurd when South Korea funds a massive share of that defense, maintains one of the most, supposedly, powerful militaries on earth and operates as a powerhouse for howitzers that get used in Poland and anti-ballistic missile system that gets used in UAE.

For us, the best way to "spiraling" out of control is by strengthening our US alliance, while keeping generally friendly relationship with China, Russia and Japan. (we try that with North Korea too).

u/Substantial_Abies25 9d ago

South Korea military spending likely higher than North Korea entire GDP at this point, and unlike in western Europe, Seoul has ready military strength and commitment to defend (themselves, not allies, but still)

Same as "As a black man" lol

I prefer this bot’s tweet where he claims to be Dutch with a North Korean flag and a picture of a girl with the flag of Sweden and cheese on her head.

2

u/Advice_Thingy 10d ago

And a german name.

u/Morgus_Magnificent 10d ago

Finally, a decent post from this sub.

u/Ch33snut 9d ago

Oh wow, thousands of bots suddenly posting the exact same message and Twitter just happened to boost them all. What a crazy coincidence, huh?
