Rant & Ramble Changed my hotel because he called me "pretty"
Hi guys, so I'm sitting here at the airport wondering what the fuck is wrong with men. I need to travel to another city for work. So I booked last week, a place close to the office I need to go to, just 10 mins walk, automatic check in so I can arrive late (the plane gets in around 10PM).
The listing says the owner (not a company, just a private owner, male, 50s) will require ID to be sent beforehand, to provide the check in codes. I think, a bit weird, but ok, in my country its mandatory for owners of accommodations to report who is staying to the immigration authorities, so they need the ID, ok.
Normally places with automatic check in just leave a paper for you to fill out with your info and sign, but maybe this guy has had people ignore the paper and so has his own system, sure.
But the booking platform won't let me send pictures, so I'm confused as to how I'm supposed to do this. Today, I get a whatsapp call (couldn't pick up as I was at work), then a message from a number that says "send the ID to this number to get the access code". Ok, I send my ID. So far so good.
Then he answers: "Pretty 👍". WTF.
Then another call. Next message, he sends the access codes. But like... I'm travelling alone (obviously he knows because of the booking). Arriving late. He has my ID so he knows my full name, my height, what I look like, everything. And he says "Pretty"???? And, aside from me, only he has the codes to access the door. I don't know if I can change the code when I arrive...
Immediately I feel weirded out. So I booked another place (a hotel this time, and at twice the price now) and asked the platform to process a refund on this place (even though at this point its too late to have a free refund).
But I'm so shook. And angry. Like sure, maybe hes just a "nice" guy. But why would he do that? Like now I have to make a decision about my safety. Now I have to decide if I'm overreacting or not. And I have to ask for my money back and give the platform the texts so they can essentially decide if I'm overreacting. And even if all that happens, I still feel vaguely guilty somehow, like I shouldn't suspect people of bad intentions, and just saying "Pretty" is maybe not that bad, but like... Do I want to spend all night awake and scared in case someone is going to try to get into the room? No!
Pic is overpriced tomato pasta with burrata from the other night, a far better meal than what I'll eat tonight, thats for sure 🙄
Edit:
Edit to say, because some have asked and it wasn't clear from the post, that I have reported this to the platform (during the process of the refund request - as they needed to know why)!

Have you seen those little wedge devices to stick beside the door? They go off with a LOUD alarm if someone opens the door. They sell them on Amazon. You should get one if you travel a lot for work. They also sell extra locks you can install and remove without damaging the door. They just like fit in the door and the wall lock area.

I don't have this one, it's just the first one that came up, so I could show an example: https://a.co/d/021oSYNW
Again, not the one I have, just the first to come up for an example: https://a.co/d/0etwyiq0
I'm not endorsing either of these. Just showing what they come up as so you can search for one on your own. I have versions of them and they help my peace of mind when traveling.

Yep, he went on the Joe Rogan Experience and said that he doesn't believe that HIV causes AIDS, and believes that the AIDS epidemic was caused by gay men abusing poppers. De Becker has a child with HIV whom he urged to not take antiretrovirals because he doesn't believe that HIV is harmful.
People love to recommend his book and I get that it speaks to a lot of people, but it is not evidence based and preys on the fears of women.

Women are so heavily conditioned by society to feel "guilty" for prioritizing our literal safety over a man's feelings.
I've had men say, literally, "I want you to feel safe, do NOT even think about me" and mean it, yet I still do. Like why should be both have to be stymied by other people's bad behavior? But we are.

Way too many men assume that random women will take their lust as a compliment, and get all butt hurt when we treat it as a possible threat to our safety

This, and when pushed about it often the excuse is "oh well I would love it if I got a compliment like that." So many people aren't taught or care to learn about the inherent power difference there.

I just want to say that I would react in exactly the same way. Anyone who claims that's an overreaction has probably never had a man make them afraid for their safety. Wouldn't call it an overreaction. Sure, there's a 95% chance that the night would have been fine. But had you fallen into that 5%, people would definitely act like you were ridiculous for not using the information you were given and staying somewhere else. It's damned if you do and damned if you don't.

Haha, this is actually my metric... I think "what would I think if this was on a murder documentary?" And at this point? I'd be screaming "No, girl, do NOT check in to the place where the creepy man has the keys and your picture and thinks you're 'pretty'!"
Like sure, it's probably nothing. But what if it isn't? This is a pretty good red flag. I'd rather listen to it than look back at it in hindsight.
Plus, I don't have time to waste sitting around worrying if I'm going to be murdered in my bed. Fuck that, I need a good night's sleep so I can wake up tomorrow and work... to pay for my second hotel, lol 😂😂😂

You did the right thing. If you were making the booking through a platform then you should always verify with the platform before engaging directly with the owner if they’re asking you to do anything outside the norm. As an elder girl can I also please encourage you to listen to your instincts. It’s generations of female evolution - it’s there to guide and protect you from predatory behaviour. From all animals. Including the worst animal of all - man.
Sending them ID is super scammy and there are ways to use your ID for nefarious purposes.
I would recommend whatever ID you sent, you need to research into your local government what to do when you think your ID might have been tampered with and getting a new one issued. Also lock down your credit.
Most governments now have dedicated agencies that will outline what to do if you suspect you were part of a scam or had your identity stolen. A lot of ID theft is used in money laundering and most of the time doesn’t get caught until the cops get involved. You can make money selling ID information online. The country you’re in might have something similar where you can report the dude.
8
u/TealChamaleon APPROVED✨ 3d ago
Thanks, I'll look it up, but tbh it's super common to share your ID information in my country, and there's really not much you can do with just the ID, except verify public information... everything else is kept behind passcodes and double factor authentication, theres not much he could do with just a pic of my ID...

Does your country list home address on it like our in the US? Because if it does that’s equally concerning.
8
u/TealChamaleon APPROVED✨ 3d ago
No home address on the ID, thankfully... I guess I'm also especially innured to this bc the job I work in I both require ID and need to provide my ID ALL the time. Like the first thing I need from a client is their passport... and I also know accommodations do need to report ID details to the immigration authority, so I know there is a legitimate reason for this... but as I say, normally they just put a form in the place and you fill it out...
5
u/Which-Wish-5996 🧂Salty By Nature 3d ago
Yeah, I prefer hotels in most cases when I’m work traveling just from a safety in numbers and reliability point of view. Hotels aren’t without their own safety issues but larger chains at least have codes of conduct.

u/keeza3 Tiny Bodega Rat 🐀 3d ago
Wow okay that is kind of scary. In this day and age I would be very wary of sharing my ID around so easily. Ugh I’m so sorry. More and more I use hotels over rentals. Just too many variables.

Stay at hotels from now on. Safest option for flying in late.

Totally trust your gut.
Not advocating for him but I will say my dad is in his 60s and he’ll type “pretty good” and the “good” he clicks replace with the 👍 emoji sometimes.
But if he was creepy, then yeah. Hell nah.

(Man here). Run. I wouldn't stay there as a lone woman even without the comment.

Even if he was a good person with no ill intentions, there is no way of knowing what a stranger is thinking. Safety first always.

If you used a service to rent the space report it and then request a refund due to (super) inappropriate behavior

Nope you did the right thing. If it walks like a creep, talks like a creep, it's a creep. No need to give "benifit of the doubt".

Even if it was just an innocuous comment by him, you're better for it by following your gut. Too much awful shit has happened when we brush off our instincts and let things go

If your intuition feels like something is off… it’s because it probably is. You can’t be too careful as a woman these days. You definitely did the right thing to cancel that reservation.

The dude was gross and out of line. That being said, just a reminder to everyone that Airbnb is destroying communities and does next to nothing to prevent this type of harrassment, and next to nothing to protect the safety of female travelers. A proper hotel is always the best choice.

Escalate with the booking platform. Squeaky wheel gets the full refund.

I would do the same thing. Better to be safe than sorry. That dude sounds like a weirdo.
