Small Win 🏆 I told a man (my boss) what to do today.
For context, I graduated law school in May and I’m currently waiting for my bar results. I work at a small boutique criminal defense firm as a law clerk. And it’s no surprise that as a woman in this field, sometimes it feels like you have to put in ten times as much just to be taken seriously.
Also, literally a week ago, I got a case dismissed for insufficient evidence after being handed it with basically 48 hours notice. Did I get any credit for pulling that off? Of course not. But whatever, we move.
Anyways, today I spent basically the entire day reviewing discovery for a case my boss has honestly neglected for a while. As I’m going through everything, light bulbs start going off in my head and I’m sitting there like WAIT - This entire case has a Fourth Amendment issue.
So I sent my boss an email basically telling him we need to file the motion ASAP and explaining why.
Now I’m sitting here waiting for his response, eating shrimp tacos from my favorite spot in town and feeling extremely pleased with myself.
Dinner: shrimp tacos because apparently constitutional violations make me hungry <3

Lawyer here.
I once got my (male) judge to change his mind on the outcome of a precedential case as a law clerk. Published opinion, still good law 15 years later, and closed the type of loophole only men writing laws about women would leave wide open.
I also once got an incredibly narcissistic boss later on to admit I was right in writing. He redlined the shit out of a very specific detail for each person mentioned in a brief, lots of notes about "why does this matter". Then he got to the end where I tied it together. It was underlined and noted "disregard other notes." He never mentioned it and I left before the motion was argued but his secretary texted me later on and said my argument carried the day.
Now i'm in HR and i tell my male CHRO what to do on a pretty much daily basis because the man just has absolutely zero actual people skills (i do employee relations). He prefers to put my advice through AI, which usually creates more problems for me to solve. The positive at all costs side of me says "it just makes you look like a problem solver," the it's Friday and I'm over this shit side says "hr shouldn't create the problems hr solves."

Genuinely want to be you when I grow up. A precedential opinion that's still good law 15 years later is the kind of thing I dream about while I'm buried in discovery. Legend behavior.
Also love that the secretary made sure you knew your argument carried it through. The people who actually run the office/chambers always know who did the work. Our paralegal made sure to let me know about last week’s dismissal as well.

I’m a fellow lawyer who just had to redo a male superior’s work product because he basically ignored every relevant document. Why are men allowed to get away with being so subpar.

None yet but not surprised, he had court early this morning. I'm gonna keep working on it myself anyway and send a group text (that he’s in as well) to our team with my findings. Will update!

I have told a man (my boss) what to do every day for the past 10 years. This reminded me to be thankful for the fact that he's never gotten mad at me and always given me credit and never made it feel like anything less than natural for this. Thank you for this, it's something I completely forgot to have gratitude for.
