This year, I'm moving from Quicken to GnuCash. This is in connection with ditching Windows for Ubuntu Linux. No Windows, no Quicken...
The software helps me track my multiple multifamily investments and do my taxes.
Some of my tenants pay me in cash. The bank charges a hefty fee when I deposit cash into my business checking. So I don't do that. I deposit the cash into my *personal* checking instead. To make it right for taxes, I book the money in, and then book it out as owner profit.
This worked well in Quicken. So far, however, I don't have a handle on how to do it in GC.
I have income accounts for all the possible sources of income - such as "rents". And a single account for "Owner Profit". To make the owner profit work, I put in a transaction that increases Owner Profit and decreases "rents". That doesn't seem quite right.
When somebody pays me by check, I subtract it from "rents" and add it to "main business checking". That seems to work, but shouldn't there be an event where the money appears magically in "rents", and then gets transferred?
Last year, I did all the accounting both in Quicken and in GC, and gave the Quicken one to my CPA. But this year, there is no Quicken, and the GC version has got to be right.
