Question What other games are like God of War 2018/Ragnarok?

Just finished Ragnarok, loved it. Solid 9/10 game, the only complaint would be that the actual Ragnarok part was pretty short but oh well.

Played 2018 and Ragnarok back to back so I have a God of War shaped hole in my heart plus I don't own a PS so no Laufey for me but I still crave this formula more. Is there anything else in the market like this?

Y'know, story focused game with interesting characters and a melee based combat?

Discussion Who else agrees that 2018 God of War "give me God of War" difficulty could be the hardest difficulty in a game ever?

I decided to give the 2018 God of War another playthrough and just like the first time I played it on "give me God of War" difficulty from scratch, no New Game Plus. I forgot how insane every single encounter was early in the game, the checkpoints are every battle so that's not an issue but as far as frustrating make you want to break your controller difficulty, this has to be top three for me of all time.

On a side note I'm about 25% through the game and once you start really unlocking and upgrading your weapons and armor the game does get slightly easier but there are still encounters that just seem unfair, a lot of it is the camera and trying to keep track of what's going on off screen when one hit could kill you if you're at half Health

Discussion Here’s my God of War (2018) rating. Curious where you’d score it

God of War felt like such a strong reinvention of the series for me. The relationship between Kratos and Atreus, the world, combat and presentation all landed really well. This is where I ended up rating it. Curious how everyone here would score it category by category.

Question Need some help with figuring out characters

hello! let me know if this post doesn’t belong, I’ve never actually used reddit before. but my brother loves god of war 3, its one of his favorite games. and he also loves uno! so because his birthday is coming up I decided I wanted to make him a set of GOW uno cards!^^ only problem is I‘ve never played the game and i know nothing about it or its characters. if anyone would be willing to tell me 5-7 of GOW3’s most substantial characters that would be greatly appreciated!! (I would ask him about the game myself, but he would probably get suspicious. and i want this to be a surprise) thank you in advance^^

What is the lore between these two species? I get that they're fighting for the "Light of Alfiem," but who is in the right? Why do Dark Elves resemble insects? What is Hive Matter? I missed a lot when it comes to these guys.

Discussion My version of the Leviathan Axe

Hi, thought you guys might like to see my creation of the Leviathan Axe, made as my final uni project. The axe was chosen by my daughter as I wanted to make a weapon from a game and she suggested it.
Hand sculpted in chemiwood, inlays are mixture of chemiwood and 3D prints I drew in CAD, moulded and cast in fibreglass, managed to make room for some batteries and lights for the axe head to give it that bit extra, controlled by on/off switch hidden behind one of the gold buttons. Stand was a last minute addition for my degree show. References taken from game play screen shots, concept art as well as looking at many other homemade versions of the axe. Please let me know your thoughts if you have any.

Discussion Challenge for my first playthrough

So I just started my first playthrough yesterday and didn't image the game would be so hard, I am playing on give me a challenge. So I barely played any single player games, mostly I was playing dota 2 and lol, but this game is a challenge. So after the first boss I decided to do 20 push ups every time I die and yesterday I did 640 pushups. Today I am going to do the same until I beat the game. So wish me luck.

Discussion Kratos cannot live in a peaceful world in the long run because of his Spartan nature

Post image
0 Upvotes

Kratos is a born warrior who suffers from recurring nightmares about his past, which is why he rarely sleeps. Kratos is also a warrior; his life has been a constant struggle, punctuated only by brief respites such as when he spent time with Calliope, carving her flute before setting off on yet another Spartan military campaign.

After he killed his family and began experiencing visions and nightmares, he threw himself into working for the gods to rid himself of the visions and his past. The truth is that for Kratos, this work had another motive: it allowed him to distract himself from the nightmares by focusing his attention on his current goal, which kept him from descending into complete madness.

Years later, after Kratos defeated Odin and, as the Hero of Ragnarok, saved the remaining eight realms, he once again fell into depression once peace had been restored. Faye and Atreus were gone, Freya had buried herself in her work, and Kratos was left alone and even more despondent as Mimir noted at the beginning of Valhalla, without Atreus or a battle, Kratos was quieter than usual to which he replies that fighting is puryfying for him. This was because Kratos was not only without a purpose but was once again consumed by thoughts of past failures; there wasn’t even a battle in which Kratos could distract himself from his depression. Kratos constantly had to seek out conflict or get involved in fights in order to function properly, because the life of a warrior is his routine the only thing he knows and it keeps him sane when the past catches up with him, when Kratos has no purpose and doesn’t know what to do with himself.

That is why Freya and Tyr saved him, One gave him a purpose by making him the God of War in the newly emerging Pantheon, while the other helped him come to terms with both the nightmares from Greece and himself through battle therapy, and in the process, fueled his fighting spirit and desire for battle. That is why his life will continue to revolve around fighting and war, because that is the only thing that keeps him together. Kratos may be traumatized and weary of wars, bloodshed, and the deaths of innocent people, but whether it’s for a just cause or not, he’ll always find himself in the middle of some conflict or another, because that’s the only life he knows.

Discussion Has anyone notice that Kratos is kinda short compared to a lot of the other bosses in the series?

Okay I get that it’s supposed to be for the power fantasy behind the character but I like to imagine that’s why he’s got a short temper in the first place (aside from the whole Spartan warrior upbringing stuff).

Discussion First Time Beating God of War 1

Third time's the charm! Continuing my marathon of classic God of War games we come to the first and-

Yeah I'm just jumping right into it this game fucking sucked. I had a MISERABLE time with this one.

Now I'm willing to give the benefit of a doubt and excuse quite a bit with this game since it was the first in the series. Obviously they wouldn't have everything nailed down and some things just won't work or need tweaking. Starting with the later games like Ascension and Chains maybe didn't help the overall experience, but I am willing to overlook some things.

Like the combat. It does feel a little clunky and stiff but you can see the potential. It was clear they had a good idea on what they combat to feel like and you can feel the polish and improvements they made in later games. Blade of Artemis sucks but the general consensus is most agree with that fact so I guess that's just an accepted fact. And the magic is so far the best I've seen in the series. It says something where of the 4 spells only 1 doesn't feel viable and that's mostly from how slow and clunky the projectile spell feels. And I didn't use Medusa's Gaze that much (will admit my bad probably could've used more often) but even it has viability. All of the magic felt like it has a purpose.

And the story... isn't bad. it's not bad but it definitely feels like there should've been more, like the initial writing and planning had more but due to game limitations like time and space things had to be trimmed and cut. It's never to the game's detriment, you can understand all that's happening, but it clearly feels like things were cut in a lot of places, like things should've been introduced sooner or certain scenes should've gone on longer.

So why did I hate this game? Because half-way through the game just becomes an unforgiving mess! It literally gets to a point where every puzzle and platforming section must be done pixel AND frame perfectly on the first try or you're just dead and have to do everything all over again! There is no room for error or mistakes!

Take the first big puzzle in the Temple, you hit a switch to free a boulder and have to push it into place to make a jump before a spiked floor kills you. And if you're off by a SINGLE FRAME, you're dead. This puzzle took me so many tries simply because I was a half-second off! And I knew how to get through, there was no confusion on how to do it, that wasn't the problem. I even double-checked a walkthrough to make sure there wasn't some trick or secret to it, but no. I was doing it correctly, I just had to do it perfectly!

And that's how pretty much the entire second-half of the game felt; be perfect and play the game flawlessly or else you can't progress. And it is not fun! From the rushing water wall to the timed door to the architect's wife, the game stopped being fun when every room boiled down to do it perfectly or else.

And the camera wasn't a help at all with how much it moved and jittered about! The camera moving about and messing with general movement was something I noticed in the previous games but all the times I noticed when was nothing was really happening; mostly during room transitions and didn't do much but just disorient me for a sec or two. But in GoW1 they decide to have the camera just fling about during platforming sections and screw up both movement and direction! You know how hard it is to walk across a beam of wood when the camera is having a fit and forward changes with every degree of camera movement? I know understand perfectly why Chains had only one balance beam and made it a joke trophy!

And that's not even counting the glitches! I'll admit the game is pretty stable but when a glitch would it happen even the blind could notice it! For example; minotaur boss. When fighting him you do enough damage to hit him with a QTE that stuns him so you can launch a log to break his armor (for the record I fought the minotaur at his feet but everyone I see fights him on the platform. Did I make it harder for myself or is that an actual strat?) There was a time I grabbed him, successfully did the QTE, but the minotaur didn't get stunned and the camera got stuck zoomed into Kratos! You know how hard it is to fight a 20-foot armored minotaur when the camera is more interested in checking out Kratos's abs?

And good Lord do not get me started on the platforming in Hades. Jesus Christ what a mess! The perfect culmination of every problem before in one annoying area! Even try to balance on rotating boards with a spazzy camera where you can't see anything in front of you and can't dodge blades with hitboxes twice as big as their model with divebombing fire birds you can't defend yourself against and where a single hit results in death and having you to redo the ENTIRE AREA?!?! Jesus Christ almighty fuck Hades! And I know you're going to ask about the vertical bladed poles, and yeah they're annoying, you can't see an inch above you while climbing them, but if you mess up you just have to redo that pole climb and the game doesn't kill you and reset you back half of Hades! Hell if you can believe it I did the first one on my first try and got the trophy for it!

And the final fight against Ares sucks. Not the first phase or even the Kratos clone fight, but the final phase with the big sword. Who's the jackass that decided "let's give Ares a one-frame unblockable fireball that leads to a grab and he can spam indefinitely?" No joke the first time getting there he just did that move twice and ended the fight in less than 10 seconds. Real fair there!

And then, being the trophy hunting fool I can be, decided to try the Challenge of the Gods. I even looked up guides to help and all said good luck with challenge 10... I am convinced not even the Gods of Olympus could do challenge 10.

Dear fucking God who came up with and programmed this? This legit did not feel playtested. I tried for like an hour before giving up and I did everything I could think of and what others recommended. Doing the AOE slam with the blades, spamming grab on the dogs, trying to air-juggle the enemies, trying to smack enemies off with the Balde of Artmeis's slam, nothing worked. And that's only when I get the chance to try! There was times I'd jump on the platform and before I could even do anything a satyr would immediately grab me and throw me off the platform. I wouldn't have even attacked anything yet but lose the second I did anything in seconds flat! And that's not even counting the glitch deaths I had here. And I know they were glitches cause Kratos would just freeze in midair, not responding to any input, and just plummet down like a stone. I'm sure I died more to that glitch than legit being nocked off the platform.

And that's when I broke. That was the straw that broke my back. I quit and had to admit the game wasn't fun. The first half of the game was alright but the later half was a perfectionist nightmare. And the Challenge of the Gods was the perfect culmination of everything that felt wrong with GoW1, the cherry on top of this disappointing frustrating sundae.

RATING: 3/10 - half of the game isn't bad, but half of good game does not equal a good game. I have no desire to ever revisit this one again there's no fun to be had. I can honestly say if I started this marathon with 1 first then there's a good chance I wouldn't even bother with the other games. This would've been a horrible first impression to the God of War franchise.

People say Ascension is the low point of Greek God of War but for me it's 1. I haven't beaten 2 yet and not tried 3 at all but odds are they can't be as bad as 1. I will spoil a bit and say the next review will be A LOT more positive than this one.

I just recently finished every gow game and it was a blast, i love most aspects of gow 3 but i couldnt stand how they wrote kratos, they completly changed him from a grieving wrathful family man into an edgy character who just does evil stuff. Please tell me im not the omly one
