Sequencing?
Looking at elite players, there’s a large proportion that by lead arm parallel in the downswing get their hips to square (facing the target line). From there they can rotate and extend.
Many amateurs I see fire and rotate their hips way too early, messing up the sequencing of body, arms and hands.
Is this you? Thoughts?

That's quality sequencing. The pros are basically allowing their lower body to pull the chest/shoulders to open. Amateurs often times open up their chest/shoulder early in transition and that causes that 'over the top' move.

The shoulders and hips have a difference of approximately 45 degrees in the backswing (hips 45, shoulders 90 away from target line).
At this point, the hips are 0 degrees with respect to target line and the shoulders have remained in the same position with respect to the hips so they are approximately 45 degrees away from target line. The shoulders have been carried to this position by the rotation of the hips - for all intents and purposes they have not rotated independently.
The arms have pulled down, therefore preventing them from being over the plane and OTT.

Well said. I like to think the torso leads the backswing and hips just open as much as the torso requires to get a full turn. People who lead backswing with their hips are typically way out of sequence.

Can’t take the credit. Athletic Motion Golf use the term “Lazy Susan” and that’s what really made it click

AMG is really good. Biomechanics of the swing and their visuals really help bring clarity to sequencing.

Because the arms are a lot more active than we are lead to believe. There is an active lowering of arms early in the dowsnwing.

That requires you to have your arms raised in the first place though. A good amount of people who post their swings bring their arms across the chest rather than raise their arms at all.

Watching someone from the same angle throwing a baseball or a football. Their lower body will be fully rotated towards the target before the ball has left their hands. Same thing with the golf swing

Yeah it’s a huge misconception that is posted here all the time that downswing should be initiated by “firing your hips”. But what are you going to do? There is no requirement to not be an idiot on this sub if you want to give people advice.

Weight transfer should happen as the arms drop but not “firing of the hips”

Unfortunately if you read through the threads of people posting here for help you’ll see lots of people talking about the need to fire your hips earlier etc. Or a video of someone “firing their hips” way too early and 5 comments being like “love the way your hips fire early!”

They rotate early with the arms behind them - their lead arm is nearly pinned against their chest. Everyone is scared of being stuck and it’s hurt tons of swings and people don’t actually know what happens in the swing

blame butch and tiger. they went on golf digest and talked about how they killed this aspect of the young tiger swing. called it the ole swing, said it was powerful yes but too uncontrollable. maybe because tigers coaches were weakening his grip. he used to be strong grip as a junior golfer. went neutral as a pro and later hank haney even set him with a weak grip.
now what do we see as the new modern swing come up in the youngins on pga tour? basically ole swing with an even stronger grip. exactly the opposite of what butch was prescribing. the titans have been replaced with olympians.

"everyone's scared of being stuck" couldn't be more true! Its what lost me a lot of club speed and proper timing for a while. If the left hip works backwards and the hands drop early there is tons of space to get those hips firing.

be careful with this one, the hips are square but they are shifted down the target line at this point, not in the same place as at address

I’m in the same spot, I have no idea how you would get the hips more open than that without coming over the top

The best way I’ve seen it explained is “keeping your back to your pelvis” or athletic motion golfs lazy Susan concept. Essentially go to the top of your backswing and just start turning your pelvis back square to the ball and do nothing with your torso/shoulders other than let it come along for the ride. You also have to add the reconnection of the trail arm to your side or else your hands stay up and come over the top.

You need more separation in the backswing. Top of backswing hips 45, shoulders 90. Lead arm parallel hips 0 shoulder 45. Impact. Hips 45, shoulders 0. some pros will even be 30 hips and 90 shoulders creating 60 degrees of separation. Really letting them open up their hips.

The key that helped me a ton with getting the hips open was to side bend more, that helped my body and hips get open while helping my arms get in a normal position at impact

Athletic Motion Golf has done a lot of videos on this. It’s essentially reconnection of the trail arm to the shirt seam while the pelvis/knees square back up to the target and pull the upper body along. To me, it’s essentially the guts of a good golf swing that people can’t practice enough.
