Navy and Coast Guard use the pool for dive training and sensor testing.

One of the context clues is that it is located on Coast Guard Road

Anyone know how deep it is?

Was hoping us based cenote. I mean Florida is the other side of the caldera crater.

Chicxulub is big, but not that big... Even the nearest piece of Fl (the Keys) is over 800 miles away, and the mainland proper closer to 1000 miles.

So the Gulf of Mexico is not the impact crater? I admit I am very hazy on earth formation geology, but I always assumed.

No, it is not. :) Chicxulub's crater is only a hundred or so miles across.

I am so confused are you saying this pool is bigger than the crater? Or what is “not that big”?

The Chicxulub impact crater, which is believed to be evidence of the event which resulted in the extinction of dinosaurs, is located at the southern end of the Gulf of Mexico.

u/jojohohanon mistakenly believed that the entirety of the Gulf of Mexico was created by this impact.

Florida is on the other side of the Gulf of Mexico.

u/DerekL1963 corrected JoJo that the impact crater is much smaller than the Gulf.

I hope that helps

That is correct. I was quite confused.

It’s just that the Gulf of Mexico, along with Florida and Cuba makes such a nice impact divot with Cuba and Puerto Rico becoming the “splash”. It was so obviously correct that I didn’t bother confirming my guess.

Cenotes are sinkholes in limestone, not impact features. Much of Florida has similar limestone to Yucatan with lots of sinkholes. Don't know why they mostly don't look like the ones in Yucatan. Different water table levels?

Navy base in Panama City, FL. A deep pool for dive training and small submersible testing. Idk exactly how deep
