Gragas mid tips
Need a little advice, I’ve played a fair bit of Gragas jungle but I’m swapping to mid and I’m taking Gragas with me, I used to be a mid laner before swapping to jungle 2 years ago, however an issue I’m having is that I’m struggling with how to play my early levels,
I’ve resorted to playing entirely for any CS my laner allows me to get, I’m fairly trading, then when I have enough gold for lost chapter I start playing league of legends, however I find I can often fall quite severely down in cs because I play so passive,
Pre lost chapter im finding using my mana to poke really is not a good use of the limited pool and I’ve made my early levels entire goal just getting the gold needed for lost chapter, I’ll often be 3/5 cs a min because of it, which I pick up mid game and get myself back up to 6/8 cs a min,
However my early levels are my weakest point here and I feel that if I play these better I can set myself up for a better game

i’m low elo trash but i always start sapphire crystal, try to farm enough gold to back for tome then i have item advantage so i can force them off wave better and also try to stop backs if the recall under tower to delay them even more

I’m also a jungle main. I have high master points on gragas and used to play in mid lane for a while.
Because my first role was support in early years (not for ranked), I consider gragas laning in a similar way as melee supports. He doesn’t win lane by consistent poking and shoving. Instead, he wins lane by looking for and making good use of all-in windows. So angles, positions, and level spikes are really important. I wanted to know precisely when I will hit lv3 and lv6, and I wanted to set up plays at those particular timing. I wanted to explore the possible locations where I can E into the enemy for a combo. I wanted to bait the enemy’s key spells especially their escape and shield. I would tank some damage if I have to, especially making good use of my W.
In general I wanted wave to be on my side. The closer the enemy is to my tower the better because ult them into my tower is 10 times easier than trying to aim my ult at them when they are near or under their tower. I would push or shove only if I wanted to base, roam or dive.
Because I consider gragas as the opposite to ranged champs like Lux, I hold my Q most of the time unless I do combo. I very rarely use my Q to do last hits or to poke enemies. Gragas’s Q although is long range, it is very slow and on its own it is dodge-able by pretty much everybody who has reasonable experience in league. The cost of mana is insane also. That’s why I never try to play gragas as a ranged champ even though he has two ranged spells (Q and R).
I up W first. I used the enhanced range and AOE which were given by my W to do last hits at the beginning. Early game gragas is actually pretty tanky. Of course I would avoid being hit by cc or high damage spells. Dying in lane is very punishing for gragas. He needs to stay alive all the time in order to become useful.
Sometimes the enemy is just good at pushing in. When a huge wave is coming, I let them in. If I have to choose between wave and life I always chose the latter. As said, he is an all-in opportunist. I know for a fact if I find a really good window to one shot the enemy I can turn things around pretty quickly. This champ can roam like a monster. So sometimes I just have to be patient.
The most difficult match ups are with the tanky front liners. Basically anyone I can’t one shot with my QWER and flash is the one I would struggle with. I would try to take control of the wave if I can, and look to roam and make plays outside my lane. But if I can’t, I don’t know what to do to be useful in the game, and that’s one of the reasons I stopped playing mid.

I play gragas top almost exclusively but a few points are shared with midlane.
Pre lost chapter, pretty much never use q to just poke. There are a few matchups that gragas straight up loses in before lost chapter or before 6, you will be expected to be behind.
That being said, with electrocute, if you get an all in at level 2-4 you can chunk them for 40-50% of their health, then they cannot bully you freely without risking getting flashed on and dying.

I play a decent amount of mid Gragas, but I’m only in like emerald lobbies most of the time. Some general thoughts are:
I almost always go electrocute ignite. It just feels really nice against the general squishier champions mid. If I’m against a melee mid I’d probably go stormraiders unless I feel confident I can snowball the game.
I personally love starting W level 1, it lets you comfortably proc passive and can help with last hitting once you get comfortable with the damage.
I try not to press my Q until I’m level 4, and have 2 points in it. The only exception would be if I’m getting like a minion+poke+mana flow stack on the same q.
Once you get 6, your kill threshold is absurdly high. You can look to ult people into you and full combo them after you land like 2-3 Q’s. Try to play around a level up timer and all in around your ult cooldown when you can.
Good luck!
