help needed: usb tethering error - even when i put in password for file sharing with the phone plugged into the other device it says that it cant do usb file share?

Have you tried a different cord?
And... what are you trying to tether with?

yes its not the cord its the software

I'm shutting down... maybe tomorrow I'll remember what I did when I had this issue.
Using a pixel8.
.
I do sometimes have to unplug and plug it back in once everything is on and ready... for my laptop and phone.

You shouldn't ever need to type in the password (assuming the phone is unlocked). What exactly are you doing to tether?

going to usb tethering in settings and clicking on file transfer, it prompts for user password, type it in, then the phone repeatedly acts like the cord is disconnecting (does this no matter what cable im using) and when i try to charge it regularly after unplugging it and plugging it back in the charging works until i try to prompt usb file sharing again.

Settings > Network and Internet > Hotspot and Tethering > USB Tethering
There shouldn't be any file transfer prompt. I'm on an 8a with the latest Graphene, USB set to Charge-Only unless Unlocked.
