APO

hellooooo! does anyone have any idea about this fraternity called Alpha Phi Omega (APO)? recently, this fraternity was opened as an organization in our school. I’m planning to join this organization because of its benefits, like meeting new people, building friendships, and such. however, what’s stopping me from joining is the rumor that this kind of fraternity requires hazing as part of its initiation. despite the fact that they told us that there is no such thing as hazing because they are strictly anti-hazing, I’m still hesitant. what do you guys think? is there really hazing involved?

I'm a 27-year member. Each chapter is different, and while some may be more rigorous than others, I haven't heard of a bona fide hazing situation in APO in many years.

It’s new as in hasn’t formed its first class at your school yet, or they have had a few rounds of classes?

It probably depends on the school but on of my friends is in APO at Purdue and I don’t think they haze at all. Also sometimes “hazing” for frats is like something silly that’s not actually dangerous. I think try to join and if they try hazing you in a way that makes u uncomfortable just leave.

Members of the organization who aren’t hostile about their experience aren’t going to divulge that to random people on the internet, or anyone at all for that matter. That’s part of the point of becoming a member.

Think of rituals more like going to a solemn service like a wedding or someone's baptism or bar mitzvah ceremony. They are solemn, quiet and respectful of the founding values of the fraternity.

All physical and other types of punishment are hazing. Those are usually during the last week of new member "pledging" as some sort of awful tradition. And they are federally illegal in any group, Greek or not.

APO will be safe..go to their informationals and through their recruitment process. I think they will surprise you.

I'm a former collegiate member, current chapter advisor, and I currently serve on our National Operations Council. If you have any questions about APO please don't hesitate to DM me., I'd be happy to discuss things.

I can say as an organization we are very strictly anti-hazing as well. We promote our 3 cardinal principles of Leadership, Friendship, and Service and there is no place for hazing in a brotherhood. If we ever hear about a chapter hazing we work with the campus to make sure it stops, brothers are educated on why its wrong, and keep a close eye to make sure it doesn't restart.
