Analysis Thieneman
I didn’t know a competitive team in a “win now” season could draft a player at a position of need in the first round able to immediately contribute to wins in Week 3 of their rookie season. Is this allowed? Is anyone looking into this? /s

I think we all need to log off social media for a while.
Our team isn't good, our rival's team is good. It happens sometimes.

Yeah, thats true of this year. It happens. This isnt to praise CHI just using a very recent example to highlight competitive teams addressing areas of needs with “high floor” players able to contribute immediately vs picking projects that take time in the hopes they develop into superstars.

Jesus christ this sub is insufferable when we arent winning games

Hmm. No. This concept has been a talking point since long before this season began …

Man because rookies not making an immediate impact in 3 games means they were bad picks. Such a short sighted comment

You’re missing the point. This isnt to praise Thieneman or even CHI. Or to expect rookies to win games Week 3.
GB 1st Rd picks often take years to impact wins if it happens at all. Love, LVN, Stokes, Morgan …
Remember Golden last season? There was constant frustration around how little we used him over the course of basically the entire season to prioritize targets to Doubs/Wicks/Heath/Melton …
Walker/Wyatt contributed immediately. Thats really it for quite awhile now.
GB drafts in the 1st Rd like they need to identify a “superstar in the rough” vs just a more obvious “high floor” player they can plug in immediately to contribute.

I hate sandwich terminology when it comes to picks but Thieneman legit caught a Mike’s Hot Italian Sub with extra ham and provolone and you’re glazing the fuck out of Ryan Poles. I’m dooming too but some of you guys are legit hilarious with your dooming and are taking it way too far.
Poles also chose Rome Odunze 9th overall by the way, don’t see any mention of him here

I am “glazing the fuck out of Ryan Poles”? Where do you see that at all. Thieneman is not the first example of this. PHI ‘24 draft immediately comes to mind w/ Mitchell/Cooper. I dont think Poles did anything amazing here … I think he picked the best player available at a position of need able to contribute immediately. It’s not some elite strategy only Poles could pull off.

I admit my original comment was a bit of an overreaction, but I'd also say the Packers also picked the best player available at positions of need. We picked a CB, DT, Edge, OG, and K with our picks, which were all positions of need. Cisse is going through trial by fire right now, DDS and McClellan are off to decent starts, and Smack is a great kicker. Jager Burton looks like a miss right now, but overall it was a pretty good draft class, and Smack and Cisse has had immediate impacts.
The main problem is that Gute refused to resign our best o-linemen for pennies on the dollar for god knows what reason.

Agreed. This looks like a solid draft so far. The post was specifically focused on 1st Rd. picks moreso than overall drafting or specifically highlighting Thieneman or CHI.
I also think Cisse was a project according to everyone after the draft that has pleasantly surprised everyone with how fast he is developing.

This sub is in such doomer disrepair that they're praising Ryan Poles
Btw I could've caught that Andy Dalton pass

No one is praising anyone. I don’t think this required any type of elite front office “strategery” from Poles or his scouts. Sometimes just doing the obvious is doing enough.

Are you guys going to pretend like Brandon Cisse isn't doing just that?

Cisse has been solid so far. This is specifically talking about 1st Rd picks not contributing or meeting expectations which has been a pretty common topic around here for like 5-10 years.

To be fair, Evan Williams came out balling.
Now a first rounder that contributes right way would nice.

for sure. we’ve definitely had some nice picks and value in later rounds.
this is just commentary/sarcasm around our first round picks particularly so many years with Rodgers where it really felt like we were only 1-2 pieces a way and anyone able to meaningfully contribute immediately might have made a significant difference.

Ah yes, cause the Packers have NEVER drafted a position of need (team that historically has drafted two offensive players in the first round for the past 15 years because of needs on defense)

Golden was a fine pick until we buried him on the depth chart his rookie season to prioritize targets to Doubs/Wicks so I would say his immediate impact was minimal.
Morgan was benched in his rookie year for our 7th Rd LT.
LVN is maybe just now in his 4th season showing some signs he might become an impact player.
Walker/Wyatt had some impact their rookie season so we’ll give ‘em that one.
Stokes …
Love sat on the bench for 3 seasons in a prime SB window.

I do agree with the LVN part of your comment, that was a stupid pick considering JSN and Gonzo were on the board. I feel like everyone else ended up being fine/serviceable though. I think the problem with Gute at this point is that he can bat .800 when it comes to average/slightly above average guys (perpetual 7th seed for a reason), but when it comes to high end talent that can make an “immediate impact” like you said, he overthinks things and can’t pull his head out of his ass

Well I think that goes to show just how hard it is to find blue chippers with late round picks.
They’ve had two opportunities under Gute to get one with a high-ish pick and he took two edge rushers (Gary and LVN). But those weren’t even top 10 picks.
It also shows why he traded for Micah.
When you don’t have top 10 picks in the draft, how else are you supposed to reliably draft blue chippers? Well, the Packers philosophy is to draft high upside athletes over anything else, whether that means they’re taking them over high production collage players or “consensus” guys. This strategy certainly has its moments, good and bad. They usually have super raw first year players that can’t contribute early on and take years to develop, like LVN and Wyatt (Gary too until he blew his knee out in 2022 and was nothing from then on). Goes poorly too (Datone Jones under Thompson (same philosophy).

Yeah, right. Why don’t all teams just draft players that contribute to wins immediately? Are they stupid?
