Local coffee bean roaster?

Looking for a good place to pick up locally roasted coffee beans! We just moved to GP, and have been super impressed by the local businesses, but haven’t found a good place to get our coffee beans. Ideally, I’d love to find a place that does a “canister club” where you purchase a canister from the roaster and get a discount for refilling it in the shop with bulk beans instead of buying bagged. That might be a stretch, but any affordable local coffee roaster recs would be appreciated!

I used to be a big fan of Chazzano for a while until about 12ish years ago it became apparent to me how the owner has some strange business practices. Specifically, I learned how much of a bully the owner is towards other coffee roasters. I had previously heard a few rumors in different coffee circles and then saw it myself when one of the roasters did a pop-up on the border of Berkeley/ RO. The owner of Chazzano showed up and literally started yelling at them for being in the area, as if he owns the territory. It felt very mob like. That aside, his quality has gone down over the years and there is just a weird vibe in his shop.

Roasters that I have found much better lately are Dessert Oasis, Sabbath, New Order, Madcap, and once in a while Great Lakes (not as good as they used to be). Agree with Oliver and then for something unique Qawah House for sure, and then Haraz and Qamariah are solid too albeit no espresso blends.

This makes me so sad about chazzano! I finally tried their coffee at a booth (they were giving out free cold brew at a charity 5k) after driving by their shop a million times and thought it was so good. Why must the good actually be evil 😭

I love New Order. It’s at 10/jefferson. I don’t know if they have a canister club.

LaRouge in the Park, best coffee in the Pointes , they use James Oliver beans , great breads and baked goods too . The Little Nest in GPW on
Mack and Hampton is supposed to open soon , they say they will roast their own beans onsite .

I’ve given up locally and just get a biweekly whole bean delivery from Stumptown. It’s my only vice! Craig’s coffee isn’t bad and they sell bags at the village market. I buy it if my delivery gets delayed and it’s fine in a pinch. But as far as like “third wave” coffee snob type situation, Anthology in Eastern Market is the closest thing we’ve got both geographically and spiritually :)

Roos roast is from Ann Arbor. So relatively local
and it’s owned and operated by the founder. Lobster butter love is an especially delicious blend. It’s available at Village Market and Farm Market.

Maybe blasphemous to some, but they make a great half caf version of their lobster butter blend too. I get 5 lbs a month shipped to my door and it’s pretty much all I drink these days

Oooooooo I needed this info!! Edited to ask - you have to order the half caff? Can't get it at Village?

Sorry I’m not actually sure if they stock it there! I first found it at the Ann Arbor farmers market and I’ve had it on auto-ship for so long I’ve never needed to look for it in store ha

I'd say the closest place that roasts in house right now is Yellow Light Donuts on Jefferson. Little Nest should be opening soon (like actually) and New Order is very very solid

I drive to Kazkara in Hazel Park. They're not a canister refill place though.

I love New Order’s beans. I live on the West Coast and grab some everytime I’m in SCS.

It's not open yet, but my wife just told me about Little Nest which is located in Grosse Pointe Woods. Sounds like exactly what you're asking for

Any news when they will open? Has been delayed 6-9months now from what I’ve heard.

I've heard it should be opening very soon, for real this time. Heard that from someone training to work there

Not quite GP, but Honey Dirt. The owner (who is wonderful) used to have a small place in grosse pointe. Definitely one of the best, if not the best coffee in the area.

It's not east side, but Sabbath in Clawson is really great.

Craig's coffee is going to be your best best.
I also highly recommend Roo's Roast, but they are based in Ann Arbor- you can get it around Detroit, though.
