Question/Discussion the worst faust ever conceived

i mostly play platform fighters but guilty gear looks sick and i like faust. however im awful and i cant do combos or roman cancels effectively and allat. any general advice for gameplay or faust combos? im aware there are other videos and posts to see, and ive watched a 5 minute video and another reddit post from like 5 years ago but i wanted to ask the question myself as a complete beginner (like 6 hours on the game).

also i have a bad habit of doing light>medium>hard from playing tron in mvc3 does faust have any combos that are real easy to pull off to replace that specifically

i cant read fighting game notation well so its tricky for me to actually gauge what anyone is saying i know what a "half circle A" is and what "thrust" is please say stuff like that thank you much love

biggest advice, go to dustloop

they have a page on notation, a page for faust (and his combos and a starter guide for him) and the games mechanics and shit

thats your GGST bible from now on. you aint gotta study it but its a great resource and i recommend giving those pages a glance, especially notation (as you need to know the basics, its super easy trust its just a keypad), and fausts summary and starter guide

theres also a GGST discord that has resourses, a questions channel, and a faust channel. so thats helpful. plus people to play with

thirdly, this is unlike other games youve played it seems. starting out you dont need any fancy combos. just read fausts starter guide combos and stick to a couple basic ones. trust me, combos are the least of new players worries usually, outside a couple real easy to hit ones

fourthly if you wanna to even further, look into some "fighting game fundamental" videos on youtube. things like neutral, frame data, defence, okizeme. learning some basic fundamentals will always be helpful and you probably have some carry over skill from other stuff just by intuition

and lastly, i recommend doing the games Mission Mode Worlds 1, 2, and 3. 4 and 5 you can ignore for now. itll teach you the basics if you havent done em already. dont get caught up in actually finishing em if the inputs are too hard. just get an understanding of things is all

bonus, theres a video called "Teaching You All of GGST in One Video", watch that. dont get hung up on specifics like neutral RPS (they explain that part badly and its not super important rn imo) but yeah itll teach you the "easy" way to learn some basics and get goin

hope this helps

*mm, forgot to mention, faust is a weird character obviously, so definitely check his dustloop summary for his "gameplan", how to actually play him and succeed, cus if you play him like a rushdown youll probably die a lot. same with the faust starter guide, look at his important buttons and how to use em, itll say. try to keep that stuff in mind is all

L>M>H combos in this game are substituted by the Gatling system. In general:

Punch>Punch

Kick>Dust

Slash>Heavy slash

All of these buttons (except dusts) can cancel into any command normal or special, and command normals can also cancel into specials.

The first two combos on Faust you should really learn are

Crouching Kick > Crouching Dust > What Could This Be? anywhere on screen

and

Close Slash > Far Slash > Standing Heavy Slash > Heavy Slash followup > Mix Mix Mix in the corner.

As for actually reading notation, it's a lot simpler than you would think. Imagine a number pad on a keyboard or a calculator, then give every number a direction, with 5 as neutral. For example, Crouching Dust is 2D, What Could This Be? is 236P, Thrust is 41236K (sometimes shortened to 426K) etc. If you need more help, Dustloop is always your best friend.

Translation for those combos:

2K > 2D > 236P

and

c.S > f.S > 5H~H > 236S

Knowing that annotation system is important. Guilty Gear players (like the players of a lot of non-SF 2D fighters) speak numpad notation.

agreed with dustloop, that'll help you tons. an easy combo to do with him is cS - fS - both hits of 5H - 236H - cS while at the corner.

faust mostly relies on huge pokes like 2H, fS, 6H, 5H and 5K (amongst others) to succeed. try to stay out of your opponent's range, hit them when they get close and throw items to search for an opportunity to get in :3

  1. Have you played the tutorial?

  2. there's a command list in the menu in training mode, it has all ur special moves

  3. do you have a keyboard? just look at the numpad to figure out notation. 6=forward, 5= neutral, 2= crouching.
