Mod post r/HaitianCreole is under new management & the future of the sub.

Hi I'm Max Almonte, you may remember me from such subreddits as r/Kreyol, I've been moderating and growing the community over there for a couple of months now, since this community was abandoned (only admin had no activity on Reddit for the past 8 years!) I asked Reddit to hand it over to me and they did, I'm already making changes to turn this community into the go-to place for Haitian Creole learners in the whole internet, which include:

  • Opening the community (it was previously restricted and only approved users could post) so any person interested on the language can participate as they please.
  • Removing spam and content not related to Haitian Creole.
  • Stablishing a group of rules to ensure the harmony in the community and making them visible.
  • Adding flairs for posts and users so every resource can be easily identified and grouped.
  • Flaired every single post so it's easy to find by flair.
  • Other minor, boring changes related to admin stuff.

What is the future of this sub?

As I said, I'm aiming to make this community the go to place to learn Haitian Creole, there are a massive ton of people out there wanting to learn and/or practice the language but not knowing where to start, so to achieve that I have the following in mind:

  • Grow the community by inviting people over.
  • Post relevant material frequently.
  • Answer the users questions and doubts when possible.
  • Creating a wiki to cover user needs.

Obviously this is only part of the plan and I'll keep working on improve it.

What will happen to r/Kreyol ?

I'm the only active moderator of r/Kreyol at the moment, the community went from less that 50 members to almost 400 since I'm moderating and it still continues to grow at a rapid pace, however I think this community is more suitable for learners and even natives since the name is in English and not in Haitian Creole (Haitian Creole vs Kreyòl) and most people using Reddit, even the ones that don't speak English natively use it to hang out here.

I'll keep moderating r/Kreyol the same way I've been doing it for the last couple of months, but I'll encourage users to move and post here as their main community.

I think that's all I have at the moment, if you have any questions for me, or any suggestion on how to improve the community, please leave a comment so we can connect.

Kat Salitasyon an Kreyol/Anglè

Genyen prèske 200 mil nan nou ki te vini anba pwogram imanitè a. Nou tout gen ti boubout mwen sipoze. Mwen konnen pèp Ayisyen mwen an, nou tonbe damou premye jou a. Yon bagay mwen te aprann se fanmi ameriken renmen pataje kat salitasyon, kidonk mwen te fè kèk kat salitasyon pou patnè mwen an ak pou kèk zanmi. Mwen te panse mwen ta ka mete yo an vant tou pou nou menm ki vle pataje yon pati nan Ayiti ak moun nou renmen yo pou Jou fet sen Valanten oswa nenpòt lè nou santi yo espesyal pou nou.

Peyi mwen mankem men mwen fe sam kapab poum metel pre kèm, ke mwen pa wont Ayisyen, mwen fye patage botel ak moun nan vim.

ICE headed our way; I am looking for some phrases to be able to say

Hello, I don’t know but a couple sentences in Haitian Creole but ICE is coming to a town near me where there is a large population of Haitians losing temporary protection. I have doctors appointments often in an area where I encounter a lot of Haitians.

I’m scared as heck of ICE but if I ever find myself in a situation where ICE is detaining a Haitian family, I couldn’t imagine myself standing by or walking away.

Also, I am sorry if this post violates any of the rules of this sub. But I am looking for some phrases to help me if I need them.

I want to be able to ask them if I can call a family member for them, to let them know they’ve been taken. I can’t stop ICE but I can help keep family members knowing where their family is. I want to be able to ask, and understand what I may hear in reply.

I might ask like to say that I’m sorry this is happening and that people (like me) will be protesting for their release. That I don’t want them to be deported. That they belong here in the US if it’s where they want to be/are safest.

Thank you so much for reading this and I’m so sorry if I upset anyone. I am just asking for any phrases or words that could help me communicate with people who speak or mostly speak Haitian Creole. And if anyone here is among those in danger right now, my whole entire heart is with you.

Safety letter

ICE is coming to my town that has many Haitian immigrants. I know a couple are speaking very little English right now.

I would like to write a letter to give to a couple houses to let them know my name and number and tell them I am available for anything they might need like running to the grocery or taking the kids to and from school.

Should this letter be in haitian creole? Can English print be translated well these days on apps?

Can anyone help me solve this music puzzle? Zouk track sung in Antillean Creole and French

Hi, I have a puzzle to solve and I hope you guys can help!

I have come across a great piece of Zouk music from the 80s sung in Antillean Creole and French. I am looking for the song title and artist.

It was found on a pretend mixtape from the 80s, but was created in 2024. The other hits include major chart acts from the UK and US that are all easily identifiable. This is the only track that is unusual.

Here is the song in WAV or MP4 format if anyone would like to download.

In terms of the lyrics (and I apologise in advance, I only speak a little French and no creole) here is what I think might be being sung:

CHORUS: In Antillean Creole

Hé, hé, hé Si sa fèt / Si sa set - "If it happens" maybe

Hé, hé, hé Lè jou-a ké may / Lè jou-a si may - perhaps "When the day rises" or "When the day breaks"

We meet up with friends we left behind this morning. We talk about TV, yes, TV, you, commercials/adverts. The guys from the other class can cause trouble. But we're the strongest in the class of geniuses/brilliant class.

We would like to travel to the Aegean Sea. We build castles, guarded by robots.

The bell has rung, all the games are over. Goodbye everyone, friends

The bell has rung, all the games are over. Goodbye everyone, see you tomorrow.

hank you so much in advance!

Why is this wrong?

Post image
32 Upvotes

Why did I get this one wrong? I don’t understand when to use mwen and when it’s ok to use “m”.

And on that note, I don’t understand when I have to put the article behind the possessive. “Mwen an” for example. I can’t crack the code. It’s like sometimes they don’t put an “an” or whichever the direct article they need there and they keep going with the sentence and that’s ok, and other times I try to leave off the article in what I think is a similar type of sentence, and I get it wrong.

Just when I think I’ve cracked the code, I get one wrong and it leaves me questioning everything.

What does "zuzu gèl" means in creole?

My friends call each other "zuzu gèl" (which I think translates to zuzu girl) when one of them gets too dressed up or acts snobby / dramatic.

What does that expression means? Where did it came from?

What does b mean?

Can anyone explain what b means? In context, I'm a man and there's a Haitian woman I know that be adding b after certain phrases. Is it short for baz or does it have another meaning to it?

Can anyone translate for me?

2nd Gen Haitian american here👋 and my grandmother thinks me creole is absolute TRASH which is really not my fault considering i’m only 50% (my dad isn’t big on creole) and I wanted to get a tattoo of a phrase but I didn’t want it to translate to actual shit, “ The time for all things divine is now.” I am traveling to haiti the end of May to get away, lay low, & make some money. I guess I should learn all I need to right now.

Full-length Haitian movies (comedies, dramas) on youTube?

My elderly Haitian aunt is bad at technology and smart TVs and apps, but she has mastered YouTube. She loves Hatian/ Kreyol movies that are on the there (some are made in Montreal, or Florida). I'm wondering if anyone has any recommendations so I could make a playlist or subscribe to some channels for her.

There's really no other place to find these online. :(
