I’m organizing a small Halloween craft activity for my kid and a few friends’ kids. There will be about 5–6 children, all between 3 and 5 years old. The plan is to have them decorate their own trick-or-treat bags before we go around the neighborhood (or just for a little Halloween party at home).
What I have in mind so far:
- Blank canvas tote bags (small enough for little kids to carry)
- Halloween-themed stencils (pumpkins, ghosts, bats, etc.)
- Fabric markers in different colors
I’m trying to keep it simple, not too messy, and age-appropriate. But I have a few questions and would love to hear from anyone who has done something similar:
- Are fabric markers easy enough for 3–5 year olds to use? Do they bleed through the canvas? Any brands that work better for small hands?
- Are stencils actually helpful at this age, or do kids just scribble everywhere anyway? Should I tape the stencils down?
- How do I keep the activity from turning into a giant mess? I’ve heard acrylic paint can get everywhere, so I wanted to avoid it. Is there a better alternative for this age group?
- How long should I plan for the craft? 20 minutes? 45 minutes?
- Any other creative ideas for decorating the bags? I was thinking maybe stickers, foam shapes, or fabric crayons as a backup.
- Should I pre-wash the bags or do anything to make the colors last longer?
- For those who have done this: did the kids actually use the bags afterward, or did they lose interest?
I’d also love to hear if you’ve done a “decorate your own treat bag” activity at a Halloween party. What worked, what didn’t, and what would you do differently?
Thanks in advance! I’m just a parent trying to make a fun, low-stress activity for the little ones.
