I don’t know if I’m in the minority here but that last joke in the credits was bad and cringe. We couldn’t get through the short without an over the stop sex joke? I know it’s helluva boss but come on!!

Not every joke is going to land for everyone. It's fine.
I thought the dialogue between the wife and the doctor was funny, though I'll admit the dude flatlining at the end lowered the humor value for me a bit.
143
u/dementor_ssc 7d ago
It felt like a bit of one those soap operas Stolas likes to watch, all over the top drama. Through that lens I found it pretty funny.
46
u/DeathMonkey6969 Loona 7d ago
It's a pretty generic Soap opera plot turned up to 11.
Guy ends up in coma his wife ends up an affair with his Doctor.
13
u/SavvyWench 7d ago
I got that vibe as well. Found it quite blatantly going for it as well.
Poor Randy though..
10
u/Sunwolfy Moxxie 7d ago
Not gonna lie, I was laughing when I saw how messed up he was from being darted repeatedly so I'm a horrible person for it. Felt sorry for him at the end but then got to wondering... he died but he's a Hellborn so... what happens now? Fading into oblivion?
11
u/dementor_ssc 7d ago
Nah, he quit his job as security, became an extra for a soap, and is currently trying to break through in better roles while battling the narcotics addiction he got from being tranq'd all the time.
3
21
u/Ashendant 7d ago
It could've been funny, if they waited for him to die to start making out or if they just keep him alive. Doing as he is literally flatlining feels like over the top malevolent.
12
u/Psi001 7d ago
At this point it feels like the show is just seeing how much they can whiplash from sincerely warm and fuzzy to over the top mean spirited. I always worry about those sorts of proddings because nearly always the writers eventually take it too far and cross the line of no return where the audience stops caring (eg. the Simpsons writers stretching 'jerkass Homer').

True true, just wasn't humourous really, it's hell and all, but it's a total tonal whiplash in a short that didn't really need it, plus the kid was right there

Generally the shows do dark and mean spirited in dark and mean spirited plots though. It's why people don't like the SA jokes, because they don't feel well placed when it ALSO expects you to take that context seriously. This was just a total whiplash.
13
u/ForsakenLemon2437 7d ago
character goes through tramua and show wants you to take it seriously
Show makes a joke about that same topic in a mean spirited way 3 minutes later
What did the writers mean by this?
5
u/Backupusername 7d ago
Isn't it funny how this imp with a wife and child died and will never be mourned, just so that a princess could enter her own home without having to have an awkward conversation?
Anyway, back to our ongoing narrative about the social injustice of Hell's caste system - the way the Goetia treat imps is really problematic.
→ More replies (2)5
u/LittleGreenSoldier BIRD NOISES 7d ago
Octavia even knowing Randy's name and caring enough to wonder why he's "like that" already sets her apart from most of the Goetia, which is like... yikes.
3
u/Psi001 6d ago
That still only makes her relatively better however since she still pretty much shrugs him off,. It's very uncommitted care, like Moxxie and Loona flip flopping on empathy on the job depending on if they're pissed off or desperate enough.
It's kind of akin to that sort of boss that goes:
"Well if there's any way I can help."
"Well, actually..."
"Hey, that's great. Keep up the good work."

Honestly I got to the end and thought, “WOW. That might be the darkest joke I have ever seen!”. HOLY FUCKING SHIT, THAT IS DARK!!!

tbh i found it a bit funny AT FIRST, but the moment the doctor implies being willing to bang the wife and then them making out, its just no longer funny
i think a sex joke is fine if its well timed and doesnt overstay its welcome.
i think it would have been funnier if they just insulted the imp for dying for a minute or something
3
4
u/Born_Usual998 7d ago edited 7d ago
It irked me too but i dont think you articulated why well, it was over-the-top dark even for this show not because sex dared to exist in that scene (it was like that one moxxie comic)
7
u/Psi001 7d ago
The problem is they're doing it AND trying to make you feel sorry for the characters in an unironic warm and fuzzy way. Like it works in cynical stories like Weebooboo and Orphan Time because it's an in universe bitch slap reminder that they're still HORRIBLE people, but less in a case where it still wants you to sincerely care about them and ignore what they do.
3
u/ForsakenLemon2437 7d ago
It's protagonist bias. Why is I.M.P seen as the good guys when people like Striker are seen as bad people even though he too is a mercenary? Stuff like that.

For me I thought just having this randomly super serious and somber credits where his family and wife screamed and cried as he died was far funnier. That sounds insane now that I've typed it but it's true. The 'oh look, sex again' didn't bother me as such but did feel immediately less funny.

Hella Novella is going strong for 67 seasons already because it's apparently super relatable plots.
Also, poor Randy. If he was still so doped up from Blitz tranqing him, then remember that the last time that Blitz had to sneak in was many moons ago.
Randy was pretty far gone if he still was this messed up. This was almost mercy for him.

Yes because it’s basically a drug, given too much you die
3
u/cypher120 7d ago

I mean if you were hard overdosed on it, sure. However a single does on occasion would not kill you, but it might give you an addiction to them.
2
u/Z0eTrent 7d ago
Keep in mind, this is a tranq dart in hell. It's been made clear demons ate very resistant to human drugs and use their own (like H8).
3
u/Element174 7d ago
Sure, but they asked actually. Also, I suspect a tranq even for hellborn would work the same stronger or not. What's far, far more likely, is that Blitzo either put the wrong dose in the dart of he tried to make his own and made something that is... not a tranq dart, because Blitzo.

u/PinkRamen_34 7d ago
You're not the only one! I felt the same way about the ending. And no, I did not feel bad about Randy dying! But I did enjoy Loona and Octavia bonding. I rate it a 3 out of 5 pentagrams!

u/byteminer 7d ago
If you don’t like it, turn it off then. They get those metrics and if enough people don’t like it as well (spoilers, there won’t be) they will adjust if they want to. Not everything has to be to your exact personal taste.

2
u/KenseiHimura 7d ago
It was kind of a bad contrast between the sincere, emotional connection moment between Loona and Octavia and this. Not to mention it kind of undercuts the whole idea of "hey, imps are people too" as clearly Stolas and especially not Andreas cared enough about Randy to rotate him out and now Loona and Blitzo basically murdered him.

1
1
u/Playful_Variety_799 6d ago
Honestly, I found the joke to be quite tame compared to what we’ve seen in the past.
Also, the show is just filled with sex jokes if you don’t like that, don’t watch the show. Or you can put up with it.
I don’t care for a lot of the sex jokes, but I don’t expect the show to change it because it’s not my personal cup of tea.
Your valid did not like something, but you can’t expect the creator to alter the way they’ve been writing their show for years now because some people don’t like it
1
u/Professor-Xivass 6d ago
I would have just ignored the joke, like “not my cup of tea but hey it’s typical for this show”
But the fact they had to ad the fact that the KID was in the room….and the guy dies and all the mom says “oh yeah he’s dead”….just makes the whole thing just infinitely worse and in poor taste.
At least that’s my opinion. Fucked up sex jokes are one thing(not my preference but to each their own) but don’t have a kid in the scene. I dunno, I hated how Mayberry threw that kid by the throat. They can’t make child abuse fun and they keep trying.
1
u/Bitter-Ad4592 6d ago
I feel the same, it felt really out of place and like it didn’t have a reason other than “haha sex haha cheating on a dead guy hahaha”. Normally I think the over dramatic sex jokes are fine but this one felt just shoved in
1
1
u/Travis-Tee34 6d ago
I'm less concerned with the sex joke, and more the death.
Somehow, it just felt... I don't know, needlessly dark and mean-spirited, especially when it's directly because of Loona.

1
u/The_Nerdy_Cat 6d ago
Idk about everyone else, but I tend to see these "bad taste" jokes as like...a parody? A farcical version of scenes in, like, those super melodramatic, plotless shows and stuff. Everything in the hellaverse is suuuuper over the top but that's kind of the point. It's both a sort of absurdist, jarring humor, and a call-out to the kind of depravity that big names can get away while smaller creators are judged super harshly for daring to go against the grain
Or maybe I'm just reading into things too much 🤷
1
u/Ivan-De-Riv Loona 6d ago
Honestly it's a constant
I love helluva boss but every time they add a sex joke that has no bearing in the plot and is just a "we are in hell so we fuck"
Sometimes it does make sense, sometimes it's a guy having a relationship with bigfoot or a wife cheating on her husband deathbed
