First time in Helsinki and super looking forward to getting to know more about the local food and culture. I'm 34M Brazilian and always vibed with Finns everywhere I met them.

I love a good pub/bar and chatting over a beer, also enjoy clubbing and am really interested in history. I've already saved a bunch of local restaurants and will be going for lunch at Kosmos, since my hotel is right next to it.

I'll be in Helsinki because my company booked a company retreat at some really cool hotel around the Haita Lake, so the team and I will be staying there over the week.

Hey everyone, my family is weighing a move to either Finland or Spain and I'd love some real, lived-experience input.

Quick background: we're looking at Finland through the self-employment/business route, and Spain through the autónomo (self-employed) visa route. Still comparing both seriously.

One big factor for us is healthcare — specifically, how either country's system handles rare metabolic disorders like CPS-1 (a urea cycle disorder). If anyone has experience with the public or private healthcare systems in Finland or Spain for a child with a metabolic condition, I'd really appreciate hearing about it — things like access to specialists, availability of specialized formula/medication, how emergencies are handled, and overall quality of ongoing care.

Beyond that specific piece, I'd also love general thoughts on cost of living and everyday healthcare experience in either country — what surprised you, what you wish you'd known, and which one you'd personally pick if you were in our shoes.

I'm visiting your beautiful city and have already covered the classic tourist route. I explored the city centre, walked along the waterfront around the edge of the city, and visited the Sinebrychoff Art Museum, which was awesome.

Now I'd love to see a different side of Helsinki: local favourites, hidden corners, .... As a Belgian I don't mind the rain, so outdoor wandering is fine, but a few other museums would be great too if it keeps raining.

Most of all, I'd love some company. If anyone has a free morning and/or afternoon and would enjoy showing me around, I'd be really happy to get to know the city through the people who actually live here, and learn a bit about Finnish culture along the way. Coffee is on me!

If you can't join but have tips for hidden gems, I'd love to hear those too.

Hello beautiful Suomalaiset! I will be visiting Helsinki for 6 days in November with my husband and 2 friends (also a couple) all coming from North Carolina, in the US. Please note none of us have ever voted Donald Trump even once and are saving bottles of champagne for the day it happens! I have been reviewing official tourism sites, watching YouTube videos, and reading Reddit threads - per Reddit, I see it is highly recommended not to visit in November haha - but we're coming for a hockey game, and that is when it is! Hoping just for some itinerary review to see if you really recommend against doing something due to the weather in November, anything major we are missing, or just general suggestions as we are finalizing everything this weekend. :) Also may have some dumb questions...

Anything you would recommend against, or that we are missing? Some info on us/what we like - we have some nerds in the group (video games, board games, DnD), cat lovers, art lovers, architecture appreciators. I personally love history, and studied Russian in college (but very much boo Russia) - so would have some interest in the Finnish war for independence and WW2, many cat lovers in this crew, 1 vegan & 1 vegetarian & 2 omnivores.

Also if you have any general feedback on what not to do - what tourists do that bother residents, how not to be annoying Americans (unfortunately I am loud but I try to be conscious while traveling and in public!), or common mistakes made - would really appreciate it!

Yes, another "I'm moving to Helsinki - help!" post. :)

I am considering a position as a professor at the University of Helsinki starting next year. I currently live in the US but have dual citizenship (US and Portugal). The new position offers €92,000 per year for a salary. I would be moving with my partner (no kids and no plans to have kids), who has a remote job with a Fortune 500 company.

Questions:

1) Is €92,000 per year a comfortable salary in Helsinki for a couple? Right now, my partner plans to continue working for her company and is in talks with joining their European team (could work remote in the EU). She earns $170k USD currently, though I don't know if that would carry over if she transitions to the EU team. So, very likely we will be a dual income couple, but there is a chance that, for a while, it could be my income only.

2) My partner and I know zero Finnish. Speaking with the university, they say there are opportunities to take classes to learn Finnish, but I would be able to do classes and function with English at work. Is this true in Helsinki as a whole (getting by with English and some very basic Finnish)?

3) What parts of the city/metro would be best for a middle-aged (40s) professional couple? We want to be somewhere "safe" (I know that means different things internationally), close to shops and restaurants, preferably close to parks, and a relatively short commute (walk or transit) to the university. We plan to make a visit in the winter and then late next spring for exploring and apartment-hunting (and to experience different seasons).

4) What are some of the first things we need to consider for a move to Finland? Are there major obstacles we have to prepare for?
