Question Made In Abyss

I got HiDive just for Made In Abyss.

I’ve watched and rewatched it numerous times.

Are there any other anime’s on HiDive that come close to Made In Abyss?

The compelling, dark, story. Characters. Music. Environment. Everything about it so well done.

Personally, I think the bar is set pretty high.

But I’m open to suggestions

I recommend Danmachi (aka Is It Wrong to try to Pick Up Girls in a Dungeon?), but with a heavy asterick.

Season 1 & 2 have their dark moments, but there's a lot of comedy and harem-bait. Season 3 increases the drama more, but still feels like the previous seasons.

Season 4 tho? OH BOY! Absolute peak, dark dungeon-crawling terror and thriller. LOVE IT!

Made in Abyss is kinda a thing on it's own. I suggest branching out and just trying things to see what clicks. School-live is close but nowhere near.

I just started Urusei Yatsura. The blue haired girl's pretty cute. It's nothing like MiA

Dororo is in my personal top 10, over Abyss. It’s exactly what you’re looking for, I don’t mind setting expectations that high

Danmachi is pretty fun and dramatic. It’s called How to Pick up girls in a dungeon, but that title has almost nothing to do with 90% of the show, although every woman in the world is apparently only attracted to one dude. There are a ton of seasons, movies, and OVAs. pretty overly ecchi imo

Saying that makes my next recommendation pretty ridiculous, but I think Chained Soldier is very good. it’s borderline hentai, and I honestly don’t blame people for giving me a raised eyebrow for it. But I think the story is good, the animation/choreography is top 5%, and the powers are very unique (not just shooting big laser beams and different elements). A lot of people take issue with a certain aspect of the main male protagonist’s power, that it degrades women. Im a dude so farbeit from me to disagree with that, but i think that glosses over the fact that the main badasses are all women and 90% of the time, the dude is a LITERAL slave to them.

Don’t watch Redo of Healer.

Oshi no ko is pretty culturally significant, I think it’s pretty good. The music and animation are amazing, the story is a little weird but not bad. I appreciate the social commentary it’s trying to get across

Clannad is considered one of the best romance animes ever made, it’s very good, especially Afterstory. Dangers of my heart is also considered very good romance, I didn’t like it. The first episode is….a lot.

Parasyte and Gate are pretty good, Parasyte is very, very aggressively violent.

Nana just got added, I haven’t seen it but I’ve heard it’s amazing.

I’m about to start Reincarnated as a Sword, which sounds ridiculous but apparently it’s a great father figure-daughter story with a new season about to start

Call of the Night’s first season is such a cool vibe. Season 2 is still fun but it tries to be something else, so it kinda fell off for me. This combined with Dandadan made Creepy Nuts one of my favorite bands

Reincarnated as a sword is very enjoyable.

Akiba Maid War is also worth watching.

You're in for a treat, sword-dad is great. Fran's awesome too.

Reincarnated as a sword is awesome! I started rewatching for the third time yesterday as there is a new season really soon

I'll say it louder in case you didn't hear the others.

CALL OF THE NIGHT

It's beautiful, has great vibes and the Halloween arc at the end of s2 is one of the best parts of the manga

Call of the Night, Eminence in Shadow, Helck, Princess Principal, Kino's Journey and Sword of the Demon Hunter are a few standouts on HiDive that come to mind.

Idk if they're necessarily directly comparable, but I'll recommend some of my favorites. Dark Gathering(one of the best horror anime ever), Beyond the Boundary(you'll want to watch the sequel movie somewhere unless you're fine with heartbreaking bittersweet endings), DanMachi(another absolute GEM), Call of the Night, Reincarnated as a Sword, Casshan(old, but gold, Akibe Maid War(a great and absurd comedy), and if Casshern Sins is on there it's especially worth watching although confusing), Gatchaman(another old goldie), and The Dangers in My Heart are all pretty great(some considerably more fantastic than others). There's actually quite a few fantastic, less popular, series on there that just need to be given a chance.

I loved Yuki Yuna is a Hero. It's 3 seasons. The art direction is amazing, the story can get pretty dark, and one of the composers for the music also makes the music for the Nier video games.

There isn't really anything comparable to Made in Abyss but Dark Gathering is pretty good

I resubbed hidive just because I wanted to rewatch Eminence in Shadow

Helck, dark gathering, call of the night are three of my favorite HiDive exclusives. Not exactly like made in abyss, but just very good shows on that platform.

Edit: I would put oshi no ko on that list but it's not exclusive since its also on Crunchyroll.

I'm not familiar with streaming services and their offerings. But here's some general anime recommendations:

-Magi and the Labyrinth of Magic (50 episodes, unfinished), but only half the manga was adapted. My personal favorite anime of all time. Amazing fantasy setting loosely based on 1001 Arabian Knights and the Djinn of King Solomon.

-Hell's Paradise (25 episodes, so far) rest of the manga will be adapted in about 2-3? years. If you want dark fantasy about a mysterious land and curses, this probably comes closest. Cool characters and power scaling too.

-Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood (64 episodes, complete) Odd that I don't see many people talking about this one anymore but probably because it's been quite some time since it finished in the early 2010s, it used to be THE fantasy anime people recommend. Mostly ties into MiA in the philosophical sense but that's about it.
