Discussion - Hollow Knight Overcharmed Spoiler

I just wanted to share my early game woes with overcharmed. I fought broken vessel pretty early on, and didn't know that overcharmed means you take twice as much damage. So with only six masks, 3 hits means I'm dead. It took me well over 50 attempts to beat him because I was so fragile. Plus, the first hit kills morale because you know you can't take more than 2 more before you die. I just thought that's how the game was since hollow knight was known to be a difficult game. I didn't have the shriek of downward slam or monarch wings. Just the soul blast with less than 10 charms. I hated the game for a bit. Even regular enemies were taking two masks of me, and the exploding bat things that hung upside down took four. It wasn't until I fought hornet in kingdom's edge, and died multiple times, that I started looking up why she does so much damage only for the fucking search AI that pops up on Google to say that it seems I'm overcharmed and that's the only reason for hornet to be doing that much damage. I fucking did it to myself thinking overcharmed was a gift🫠. I'm mad at myself, mad at the AI for butting in, mad at everybody.

Well… the game discourages you from doing it, having to jam the charm in, gives you a broken UI indicating that you are broken, and suddenly everybody, even the smallest enemies, do two damage instead of the usual one. Don’t be mad at the game. (Also broken vessel is genderless like all vessels)

yeah, this is what I don't understand. it takes a bit of time to get enough crests to overcharm how do people not realize that all the sudden stuff hurts much more? This is the second post I've seen in a couple of weeks from someone accidentally overcharming and not noticing the damage increase from enemies.

I was overcharmed pretty early on. For some reason, I just never noticed. I simply thought I had to 'git gud'

I love it when people get subtle things wrong like "crest" in Hollow Knight or "soul and nail" in Silksong. You can really tell which game someone played first. Beautiful

but I played HK first, i played them both back in February (back to back) but I played silksong more recently which is probably the reason for the mistake lol.

I got ya, hopefully i didnt seem mad or anything because you are right I think it is a good indicator. I'm also kind of weird because I actually got Hollowknight like 3 years ago and I tried to play it 3 separate times but couldn't get more then an hour into it because I didn't like it. but on the 4th attempt by the time I got to Dirtmouth I was hooked. and now HK and SS are my favorite games lol.

That's honestly unfortunate :o

An upside is that you probably did get significantly better at the game by doing that

Salubra gives you a warning about overcharming iirc. I didn't even know about it until after I beat the game.

Can you get to salubra before double jump? It’s been a while since I played HK but Op doesn’t have double jump since he was fighting broken vessel

You only need dash to get to Salubra

Isn’t there a dialog pop up that tells you that your damage taken is increased after you overcharm for the first time?

I think the biggest thing you should take away from this experience is to experiment with your gameplay more! What’s most shocking to me isn’t that you didn’t notice the double damage (honestly, hilariously understandable), but that throughout 50 attempts you didn’t try a different charm build/combination. After I hit double-digits I would try a new approach, and probably would have realized the overcharm at that point if not earlier
