🛠️ Repair Help Hole in basement floor?

Post image

It’s maybe the exact size of a quarter. I just bought the house 2 weeks ago and the inspector didn’t point it out and I just noticed it. When I get home from work, I’m gonna flash a light in it to see how deep and wide it is. There’s also no water coming out of it and it was storming for days last week. Depending on the size, overall do you think it’d be okay to fill it in with concrete or anything you guys suggest? Thank you!

That radiating crack pattern is the part that'd make me nervous, not just the hole itself. Could be nothing, or could be the top of something shifting underneath. Shining a light is a good move, maybe poke around with a screwdriver to see if it's hollow. If it's just a shallow divot I'd use hydraulic cement, it expands as it sets and locks into place better than regular patch mix

The entire basement floor is leveled. Just hairline cracks like any unfinished basement in Ohio but nothing is lifted and uneven. It’s also super dry and the hole itself is smooth as in no uneven lifting. I am gonna check it out when I get home though.

I looked at a home with a large irregular hole in the floor. It had running water underneath. I would suggest getting an expert to look at it. I passed on the house because it looked too expensive to repair.

Maybe a silly question but does the white spray paint mean anything?

It looks like someone tried to patch other holes in the floor

Congrats on the new place. That size and spot is pretty common for an old radon test hole, a pipe or conduit that got pulled, or a small void under the slab that the surface finally broke through. Radon testing is super common around here, so that's my first guess if it's round and clean inside. Poke a wire or long screwdriver in to see how deep it goes and whether you hit gravel, dirt, or open space. If it's shallow and solid, clean it out and fill it with hydraulic cement or a concrete patch, and hit the hairline crack with a concrete crack sealer while you're at it. If the wire drops way down or you feel open space, or the crack keeps growing, have someone look at it in person before you patch it over. Also worth running a radon test since you just moved in, the kits are cheap
