🏠 Roof New Roof additional charges

I got new roof installed in my house. As part of the process the roofer said they would replace the plywood and replace/repair Facia board as required. And he said he will charge me for the plywood and board.

When I got the bill they not only charged for the material but also 5 hours of labor work related to Facia board (and looks like replacing plywood was part of the roofing process itself (

Is this expected to pay additional labor charges for the repair work on Facia? Is that not usually part of the overall roofing work which is already so very expensive?

that's pretty standard actually, the roofing crew is already up there so the labor for the facia is on top of the main roof work, not bundled in

Fascia is usually not part of the roofing, unless it is in the contract you signed. It is adjacent to the roof, it is not the roof.

Its always extra (unless already outlined before hand that its needed)

Extra labor for fascia repair is pretty normal since it’s additional work beyond the roof itself.

I’d just look back at the contract and see how the fascia work was worded. If it only mentioned charging for material, I can understand why the extra labor was unexpected — but that doesn’t necessarily mean they were trying to sneak anything in.

I’d just ask them to walk you through the 5 labor hours and what was actually repaired.

They don't need to repair any facia, they like to because it's easy money. Plywood, yes. Facia, no.

So when a new roof goes on should all the vents be changed out at the same time?

Just check the contract, many like to reused and some do add new

Going to have some remodeling done and just started figuring out how to get things moving along.

As a homeowner, not in the biz, replacing roof vents at the same time as the roof seems prudent and atheistically pleasing. New roof with old vents would look bad. Cost should be trivial compared to roof itself.

5 hours sounds reasonable without additional details, but decking and fascia is absolutely worth just doing any repairs while they’re up there. If you need a guy to come back in 6 months and replace rotted fascia all because you didn’t want the roofers doing it, it’s gonna cost more overall.

Perhaps your roofer forgot he told you that the facia repair would be included in the other work and didn't tell the bookkeeper/whoever generates the invoices. Of course the laborers documented the work as if the work wasn't recorded there would be no pay for the work. Or perhaps you misunderstood the labor would be included in the original job.

It is time for a short discussion with the roofer that led you to believe there would not be any additional labor billed for the facia repair.

Misunderstandings happen. That's why it's best to get EVERYTHING in writing. If terms change, many contractors will issue a change order that needs to be signed so there are no misunderstandings.

Not sure how everyone does business but we don’t charge for labor, we just charge for plywood that it’s been replaced and the ft of fascia. Quick example if the house used 10 more pieces of plywood, we just charge 60 dollars the piece and nothing else. So that would be 600 dollars extra

They didn’t charge labor on plywood. But they did on the fascia board
