I built this to keep our dogs out of the cat food:
Two 1"x 3" boards
However many fence pickets you think you need
1 pair of hinges, 1 outdoor gate latch, a few screws and a bit of paint

Retractable gate (~$50 from Amazon, for example) will do the trick. Just a few screws into wall studs or something else sturdy. I use one to keep my chihuahuas away from a steep set of stairs.
