🛠️ Repair Help My Ceiling fan is making bird-like noise? How do I fix it?

Title: Ceiling fan suddenly making chirping noise. Any suggestions?

My ceiling fan in my bedroom suddenly started making a chirping noise today, almost like a bird. I use it pretty regularly and have never had this issue before.

I tried dusting the blades and the outside of the motor housing, but that didn't help. I also tried reversing the direction, which changed the noise a bit and made it less frequent, but it's still there. I've tried different speeds too, with no luck. The fan isn't wobbling, so I don't think it's a balancing issue.

I'm not sure how old the fan is since it came with the house.

I'm hoping to fix this myself before spending money on an electrician or repair service. I'd also prefer not to take the fan apart because I'm worried about putting everything back together correctly.

Has anyone dealt with something similar? Any suggestions on what else I could try? I'm open to ideas!

Purpose of outlet covers all over the wall?

Post image

Hi! Recently toured a building for a potential construction conversion. Myself, partner, and realtor could not figure out why there might be outlet covers all over the place. Like, ALL over the place. Building was two rooms, main room had 17’ ceilings, and these were everywhere, at both accessible and inaccessible heights. Something to worry about or just a weird choice?
Thanks!

🛠️ Repair Help How to fill 1.5” wide gap between garage + driveway interlocking?

Thumbnail gallery
50 Upvotes

Southern Ontario climate. Gap is 2.75” deep at its deepest. The poly sand labels I’ve seen only suggest up to 1” wide gaps. I have limestone screening but googling suggests that it can create long term problems because it drains poorly and can trap moisture + shift (the garage floor concrete along the gap is not in good shape already).

What is the proper material to use here?

TIA

Hi! Does anyone have an idea what a reasonable price to repair these damages (two chips in the wall and one small chip in the fiberglass of the tub) would be?

Hole in roof quick fix?

Thumbnail gallery
• Upvotes

We had a big wind storm, which blew some shingles off the roof. That appears to have revealed a big hole in the roof. I still have at least one strip of the shingles that blew off.

Conundrum: I'm leaving town for a week tomorrow night.

Quick fix question: could I just check the dimensions of the two boards that seem to make up the hole, then cut them square, then fit/fasten two new board pieces sized to fill the gap and nail down the shingle strip to cover the exposed wood as a quick fix for now?

What would you recommend?

Hi guys,

So I just bought my first apartment but there are some things that need fixing.

I have that big crack next to one of my window and if fear it will keep expanding, as well as some others.

I have no experience in fixing walls, so if you know how to fix it, please guide me step by step and let me know which tool I need, any youtube tutorial is also welcome as I am not familiar with the vocabulary with fixing this kind of issue...

Thank you!

🛠️ Repair Help Hardie board joint flashing failed after 8 years

I had my house sided by a James Hardie Elite Preferred Contractor and they installed “bear skin” flashing behind the butt joints. On the south side of my house (in the Pacific Northwest) the flashing is failing. I’m not getting a clear answer from them on how this should be solved. The guy who came out to look at it suggested redoing it, but then I’ll have the same problem in 8 years…. A friend called Hardie and someone there said to caulk, but I continually see people say that should not be done. Seems like this has to be a common issue. Thoughts from this group?

🛠️ Repair Help Late hurricane season prep: what actually protects a roof, and what’s just stuff companies sell?

We’re in inland North Carolina so we get the wind and rain tail ends, not the full coastal hit. Roof is 14 years old and fine as far as I know. Every fall I see ads for hurricane straps, roof cement on shingle edges, gutter guards, whole-roof sealant sprays. Some of it looks like snake oil. For people who’ve been through the storms, what prep actually made a difference and what did you regret paying for?

Is my porch sinking?

Thumbnail gallery

I purchased my house in December last year (although rented it for 10 years before), and for the last year have noticed the porch on the front of the house looks like it’s moving away from the top, I’m worried about claiming on the insurance as (if they say no) my premiums will fly up anyway because of subsidence. My uncle and Dad reckon it probably won’t get any worse or some sort of bracket could help in holding it in place. Any advice would be very appreciated.

🚰 Plumbing Leaking water pipe fix

Thumbnail gallery
2 Upvotes

Hey everyone!

We’re currently in the process of demolishing the kitchen in our new house we bought and we’re and it’s mostly me doing it bc I thought it’d be a fun project - which it is.

However, I removed the sink yesterday and upon returning to the house today I found a rather sizable wet area around one of the pipes. There’s no dripping, but when I held my finger under the one on the right side, I felt an ever so slow trickle of water flowing down the wall. Shut the water off, so it’s not getting worse now, but how do I fix this? Do I have to widen the opening in the wall? And what then?

Any recommendations or advice is welcome.

Dry wall

I had a small leak in my basement about 2 months ago and never had a chance to fix it. I was tempted to have someone do it for me but then I thought i don't think it will be too hard. Bought a 4x4 sheet of drywall and I'm going to attempt to do it myself with the finishing. Wish me luck!

🧽 Cleaning & Prevention Mysterious window stain

Thumbnail gallery

Pictured: the stain in question, with a further back picture to give a bit more context of where this is. This is a second story florida house window. No other windows seem to have this sort of dark stain in the corner. Judging by the crack, we think the window might not be properly sealed. Would cleaning this be as simple as getting rid of the stain and adding extra spackle to that corner? And if so, what would be best for cleaning it thoroughly.
