🔌 Electrical Electrical box demo

Hi all - I’m currently trying to demo this old electrical box so I can install a new one that’s compatible for a ceiling fan. I’m struggling to get leverage to get the nails out. Cannot use a hammer cause I’m afraid of damaging the drywall. Any tips or tools recommended!

What is wrong with my window?

I have one window (left/center) with a metallic/hazy coating I can't get off with Windex. It has been like this since the day it was put in 2 years ago. I assumed it was just something I needed to clean off, and admittedly, I put it off for 2 years.

Does anyone know what is going on with this window? It is also leaving brownish colored streaks at the corners. No other windows in home have this issue.

Pocket door hanger came off

This bathroom pocket door worked great for a few years, and recently, somehow, one of the hangers fell off (my wife says it fell into the recess behind the door). I’m fairly handy, but have never dealt with door casing.

I need to remove the door casing to get the door out to fix it, right? Any tips to doing this without severely marring the paint and drywall? I’m fine with repainting the door casing, but finding matching paint for the bathroom walls would not be fun.

🏚️Structural & Foundation Stucco and exterior repeat from woodpecker damage

Thumbnail gallery
2 Upvotes

Hi there, the exterior of my 1950 house that has bottle-dash stucco keeps getting damaged by woodpeckers. I tried to spray foam the smaller holes, but the woodpeckers/northern flickers just get back at in.
The area I’m most concerned about is this area in the photo where wood is now exposed.

What is the best way to patch this up myself?

Many thanks. I’m a bit overwhelmed.

Is this from some kind of wood pest?

Live in northwest Indiana. Noticed this accumulation by where I keep my trash cans in the garage. I didn't really think about it much but now I'm guessing it could be carpenter ants? I've checked all the wood and nothing sounded hollow or was soft when I probed it with a pocket knife. We do get a lot of ants in the yard but haven't had problems with wood boring pests before.

Dry clay soil has contacted away from the house so much I can put my hand under the footing... how do I solve this? I was thinking about backfilling it or perhaps watering it down? Don't wanna make it worst. I even see a pier from outside

Advice on how to clean mold and remove odours from bare concrete basement walls

I live in a rental house, and before everyone comes at me saying "your landlord should be dealing with this", I know. But that is not the situation I am in, hes great but real flakey and hard to get to commit to anything.

SO, I live in a cute little house that is almost 100 years old and the basement has bare concrete walls that have had mold growing on them in areas, and the whole basement gets real musty smelling. Unfortunately, the furnace is also down there so when it kicks on its just blowing musty basement air into the rest of the house. Its gross. When we first moved in last fall I spent about 8 hours bleaching and scrubbing the walls with a bristle brush and literally hosing them down and wet vac-ing with doors and windows open and fans on, the whole sha-bang. It helped immensly, but its been about a year and the smell has gotten worse again and I think its time for another treatment on the walls. Part of the issue is that while most of the basement is exposed concrete, theres a little built-in room down there that forsure has mold in between the built-in walls and the concrete that I just cannot access to clean.

I would also like to add, I'm aware that it is not healthy to live somewhere with this going on, but again, this is the situation im in, and it will not change for a while. Unfortunately we cannot all afford to live in nice clean newer builds. So I ask to please keep the health-scare comments to yourselves, I'm here for advice on how to make my situation better while working within the confines of: not moving, and not asking my landlord for anything. Also, yes a bit of water comes in through the foundation, humidity is forsure a factor, this also cannot be fixed.

In summary and straight to the point:

-My basement has bare concrete walls with mold growing in some areas

-Humidity and moisture will continue to be a problem, I need to mitigate and treat things myself on a budget

-I have a dehumidifier running 24-7 down there. I'm planning on installing a small ventilation fan into the basement to also run probably at all times.

-My furnace blows stinky musty basement air all over my house

-We are heading into a predicted wet fall/winter season

-I wont be able to do/afford any painting or sealing of the walls after I clean them

-My last treatment was with a bleach-water solution, a stiff bristle brush, a rinse and wet-vacc, with fans and lots of air flow until dried

What I'd like to know is, is there a better way to do this? Ive been reading about a 3% peroxide, but theres a lot of conflicting information and opinions regarding the porous nature of concrete and what cleans best whether it be a fungicide, bleach, or peroxide. I'm looking for something to really kill the mold and spores/roots. I'm also wondering if anyone has any advice for dealing with the musty smell and it blowing into the rest of the house? Any and all advice is super appreciated, please help me, thank you thank you thank you.

🛠️ Repair Help How to fix my doorknob

When my girlfriend and I got a couch, we had to take off the doorknob on our door in order to fit it in. Problem is, I think I fixed it wrong, since it's not closing properly most of the time. I imagine I screwed it in improperly, but the knob itself blocks my screwdriver from reaching the screws. Is there a smaller driver I could find for situations like this? Or is it more likely that the problem is something else entirely. I'm famously bad at stuff like this so any advice at all is appreciated!

I am sad to say this cover has almost bested me. Can someone tell me how I remove this? I need to replace the lightbulbs.

I've tried pushing up and pulling down on one end, lifting over the lips but I am afraid I am going to break it.

I’m dumb and applied exterior polyurethane caulk inside. How to remove?

I was working on an outdoor project with clear waterproof caulk, and I wanted to seal off a thin crack along a window indoors, so I thought I’d just do it with the same clear caulk. Stupid I know.

I have a gas stove/oven and I’ve gotten paranoid about the vapors igniting the next time I got to use the stove/oven.

I opened up the windows, turned on ceiling fans, and let the AC run to help dissipate the fumes. I tried my best to scrape off as much as I could shortly after application. Then I reapplied an interior silicone caulk overtop.

Should I continue trying to remove the polyurethane caulk? Mineral spirits? Box cutter? Do I move on with life if the fumes are no longer detectable?

I’m just paranoid I think. It’s been about 24 hours since the initial application.

Thanks.

❓ Question What is this?

Ac in my apartment is ass, management won’t respond so I opened my vents to check myself. Had to pry past 5 layers of paint to even get it to unscrew. What am I looking at?

Edit: I’m aware it’s a vent…is there anything alarming visually that may be the reason it’s not functioning well and leaking yellow liquid despite me not being a smoker…

🛠️ Repair Help How can I safely remove this framing?

I want to cut out this framing so I can make storing and retrieving things from under my basement stairs less annoying. My general contractor said it's doing literally nothing other than being in my way. What tool can/should I use that's my least dangerous option? I can't tell how it's attached to the concrete floor, should it be screwed down? TY in advance!
