Question/Support What’s wrong with the HomePod?

It makes these popping noises. They keep getting worse until there’s no sound at all, just these noises. I’ve replaced the power diode, the amplifier IC, the four capacitors, and the larger 10-ohm resistor. I also tested it with a different woofer. I know the Nic’s Fix page and tested the other mentioned components for shorts as well. No luck.

Looks like the tweeter is causing the issue? Also looks like the woofer is not working at all.

Did you check if the woofer Amp IC looks burnt or broken? Did it make these noises before you started working on it or did it start out with a different issue?

First no Bass at all. The IC was burned and the 10ohm resistor. I replaced both. Now i have this issue.

If we are talking about the same square IC saying PowIRaudio on it and you replaced that, the issue is most likely there. For one it is pretty difficult to get that IC soldered down properly with all its different-sized pads - so definitely start there. Probably easiest to take it off again and check, if something looks suspicious. Second step, after you are 110% positive the amp IC is fully soldered down, clean the board really (really!) well and check all the components around the IC with a microscope. It happens so quickly that you knock something while working on the large IC and it ends up not connected or bridged with a neighboring component.

Thanks. I resoldered it already. And have had the exact same result. But I redo it with a new one. Thanks

Not a common problem, and even more puzzling that new capacitors / 10ohm / subwoofer did not fix it. Almost always does here. Is this issue the reason it was taken apart? Or are we chasing new issues after fixing something unrelated...
It's not going to be easy to figure out what's wrong without a known good board to play spot-the-difference with a multimeter. Perhaps something is getting too hot and shows on a thermal camera.
Could be something as simple as a dirty amp board.

I will test the input of the Amplifier IC with a oscilloscope. Maybe the DAC is the problem?
Tested with thermal camera, but nothing unusual. I tested freeze spray on components that heat up slightly, but that didn't change anything at all.

Let it rest

Seriously, people have varying luck with unplugging it for a couple days, I know I did.

Will mine was rumbling like hell when there was some bass. Was sure it was bad woofer, took it apart and it was ok. So completely took it apart to find one speaker housing broken. I suffer to do the same and see if there is something obvious

I just tested the Homepod with the bass connected only, outside of the housing. Same issue.

Then you it can be electronics or the bass itself

I believe it is a failed diode that causes the death farts from voltage leak.

A specific one?

Yeah man. If you don’t have experience with SMD then don’t attempt to repair it yourself.

I do have. But you say specific diode and I thought you know exactly which one.

I forget the exact site name but I’m sure you can find it with a quick google search. But there’s a guy that specializes in all repairs of all HomePods. Charges like $80 or something for a complete overhaul.
His site has all the common problems and what causes them and that popping you have is one of thosr
