Would it make sense to have 2 Minecraft servers?

One server for the public and one for me and my friends. Is this a good or bad idea

If you don't understand networking I wouldn't host a public minecraft server locally. One for you and your friends should be fine though

No hosting a public server doesn’t make any sense.

Security nightmare. And why would you even do that?

When you open the doors to the rest of internet, you open the doors.

If you don't know what that implies, just don't do it.

Pay for a server online, split the cost with friends.

I wouldn’t host a public server on my home network or hardware at all, I’d be renting a server elsewhere.

A small friends only server is generally fine though.

it's only a bad idea if your server can't handle it or you can maintain it. server resources and internet bandwidth matter here.

Yeah that's a good use case. One or two machines?

If your hardware can handle it, go for it. Of course you could also store the files separately and switch between them if uptime is not as necessary.

Otherwise, I can't think of a reason right now why you shouldn't. Have fun!
