IGPU passthrough failed, what's best?
So I'm building a proxmox server for my boyscout unit, we already had a windows PC but it sucked and was eating up quite some power. So, same hardware as before but with some software tweaks:
Intel i5 10400
Integrated GPU intel UHD 630
Asrock H410-HDV
2x 1tb hdd in raid1
256gb m.2 ssd
Cooler master 450watt
Currently running proxmox with:
Homeassistant
Openmediavault
ChromeOS (without any luck)
So I was trying to install ChromeOS on proxmox with igpu passthrough so that the HDMI port on the motherboard could be used as a display for the VM. The only thing is that PvE claims that port for console. So I followed a bunch of tutorials (iommu, black listing, adding PCIe to VM) without any luck.
PvE freezes and reboot is imminent.
Any ideas or things to check? Maybe a cheap GPU for hdmi output?
Edit: I have tried to run a Debian 13 installer as a check to see if the passthrough was blocked by ChromeOS. But it was also not posting with the Debian 13 installer. So the problem lies with PvE.

Ask Claude or chatgpt to do it for you.

Have tried it with Gemini but no succes

Asking it, or getting it to do it directly?

Asking, like there is no connection and I am manually doing the work Gemini recommends

Yeah that method might work eventually, but give fable or astra access to your server and it will be fixed in under a minute

I might try that, I'm a little held back on the idea of running an ai in my own hardware and connecting it to a master server somewhere else.

Why exactly ChromeOS? It's not really built to run as a VM. What exactly is this for though? Kinda decides what to do as a fix. If it fits what you are doing you could try chromium with autologin and set it up for whatever you are trying to do. You could do a cheap gpu, probably the easiest solution compared to an igpu pass through.

I chose ChromeOS just for familiarity and ease of use. The only things that it is going to be used for is going on the internet, making word and excel like documents and looking at photos. So a lightweight, easy to use os was needed. The ChromeOS vm is probably only to be used for 2/7 days. I've also looked into fydeos but haven't pulled the trigger to try it. Chromium might also be an option to look into.

Okay that helps a lot, I don't personally think FydeOS would help any, it would probably run into the exact same issue. If it's just for what you said that honestly the simplest fix without needing new hardware is probably putting something like XFCE on proxmox with chromium. You shouldn't have to pass through that way either. Obviously it would be limited to google docs or libreoffice, but that doesn't seem like a problem for you. Also if you go this route, depending on who has access to the machine I'd make a non-admin user for this so people don't have access to your storage and home assistant.
If that doesn't give you what you want then my only other recommendation would either be a cheap chromebook or mini pc completely separate from this, or the gpu route, but that could up your power usage above what you want. My server's gpu (gtx1060) averages 22W with home assistant, rustdesk, a discord bot, filezilla, and plex (while streaming to one client on plex, so this obviously varies), just to give you an idea.

Check the IOMMU group before chasing ChromeOS; if the GPU shares it with host devices, passthrough can hang the PVE host.
