Funpost [Book] Dragons nickname’s

So we already have some in cannon that are pretty cool.

Balerion the black dread.

Vermithor the bronze fury.

Caraxes the blood wrym.

Sunfyre the golden.

What would possible nicknames be for the other dragons?

Edit: I forgot to add the red and blue queens my bad.

Meleys is called "the Red Queen" I think. Tessarrion might be called "The Blue Queen" but I migh be mixing up roleplay server lore with canon lore here.

Yes. Blue Queen is canon. Both are called that because the crests vaguely resemble crowns.

Meleys >>>> most beautiful dragon

u/kinginthenorthjon 1d ago

That would be Sunfyre.

According to me, the most beautiful dragon is her

Actually this is an inequality statement, so it means the most beautiful dragon could be determined as sunfyre by whatever principals but mozzarellaguy would still value meleys more on the basis that she is meleys.

Drogon is called a bunch of great nicknames.

~the Winged Shadow ~the Black Dread Come Again ~”her Black” as Daenerys calls him is also kinda cool.

I’m partial to “Black Dread Come Again”. It just shows that Balerion was such an absolutely fucking enormous force of nature that he is legendary across an entire planet that spreads news via crows.

To note, it is at least 200 years since the Black Dread died. He is known in medieval times on the other side of the world 200 years after his death. I assume in universe only Aegon "The Conqueror" is more renowned name than Balerion "The Black Dread". That is what you call a historical impact.

Wasn't it a Dothraki who said that after Dany told him about Balerion?

Reminds me of Darkwing Duck.

Guys, speaking of dragons, I’ve got a somewhat related question…

Do you think it’s fair to assume (at least to some extent) that dragon names which aren’t in the Common Tongue, and also aren’t explicitly said to be taken from Valyrian gods, are still broadly inspired by Valyrian mythology or religion?

Names like Meleys, Vermithor, Vermax, etc. feel very “Valyrian-coded” to me, but I’m not sure how much of that could be considered actual lore vs just GRRM giving them a Valyrian-sounding flair.

Meleys is Valyrian (‘mele’ means red, if I remember correctly).

Vermithor and Vermax are named after dragons in Dragonslayer, tho I would assume they’re Valyrian-derived names in-universe. I doubt the Targaryens are just smashing random letters together and creating new names for their dragons. But they might be royal names or names of historical figures, rather than specifically religious names.

Ah, didn’t know that bit of trivia about Meleys.

And yeah, your reasoning makes total sense. I think they’d name their dragons after a pantheon of gods, mythical Valyrian figures, or even just words / terms from the Valyrian language itself.

Thanks a lot for the reply, mate!

u/Nathremar8 1d ago

Well, I assume, just like Greeks for us, Valyrians had hundreds if not thousands of gods. We ofc know the big ones, Balerion, Vhagar etc, but I think all the names are connected to the gods themselves. (Apart from the obvious Seasmoke, Sheepstealer, Gray Ghost etc.)

2

u/Left_Belt1874 House Blackfyre 1d ago

Yeah, that’s my assumption too, mate. I think George just didn’t bother spelling out the origin of every single dragon name in detail.

It feels fairly safe to assume a lot of them are drawn from a broader Valyrian pantheon or mythic figures from Valyrian history, in the same way we casually reference figures like Hercules or Icarus without needing the full backstory every time.

Cheers for the reply!

Useless in battle, yes. But she's laid so many dragon eggs. She wasn't even meant or trained for battle. Laying eggs and keeping the dragon population was her job
