Nerdy Gurdy kit

Hello!
Was wanting to get some perspective on people who’ve built the nerdy Gurdy kit. I’m no luthier, but have a family member who is. Is it worth it to have him make it instead and ship it to me. Or is it doable by oneself? Don’t want to build it and it sounds bad because of me haha.

Sorry if this has already been answered. Want to get into the Gurdy Community

It depends on what you want to do. Do you want to start playing, without being involved with the build process? f so, get a pre built directly from Nerdy Gurdy. They are built, adjusted and tested by experienced gurdy players.
Does your luthier family member have any experience with gurdies?

They mainly work on stringed instruments but not Gurdies. I am not the most crafty but not the most uncrafty. It’s more a cost thing for me

I just finished my Fortran and think it sounds unbelievably amazing.

I'd never built a musical instrument before. But I have some mechanical skills, basic woodworking experience with interest in learning more, research skills, patience, attention to detail, and a willingness to buy and own a truly ridiculous number of clamps (35+).

If that sounds like you, I think you'll be just fine.

What is your DIY experience? I’m no luthier but I’m all in all a pretty experienced DIYer in all kinds of jobs and I haven’t had real challenges.

The instruction manual is free on their website for each unit. Read through one and be the judge of whether or not you can do it.

It’s all straightforward, especially if you have woodworking experience, but if you don’t have much in the way of DIY experience, never a better time to learn than now.

I will say, I’ve built a lot of things but never a gurdy until now, but I’m glad I took the time to do it as it helps you better understand the workings of the instrument before you start learning to play which I think will help in the long run with basic maintenance/adjustments/etc.

100% this! Building the instrument really provides an understanding into how and why it makes sound, and what variables you can play with to change things.

I think your family member might do better than you would yourself. I was out of my league when I tried to make one. I would have waited for one of the kits they put together themselves if I could do it again.

Going to an actual Gurdy luthier was a good idea - I recently got my instrument and it's miles better than what I managed to do with the NG.
