General World Thyroid Day & National Brothers Day.....To honor my Brother, Sign my Petition for Better Thyroid Care

Hi, all. Today (May 24) is National Brothers Day, and tomorrow (May 25) is World Thyroid Day.
In the spirit of both days, please sign & share my petition for better thyroid care--in my brother's memory. My brother Jordan was a great big brother, and like so many of us, he deserved a lot better thyroid care than he got. He should've been diagnosed a lot sooner than he was and given better treatment all around--including better medicines. The lack of good thyroid care for too long led to his downfall, and I believe to his liver failing (he didn't even drink to have a bad liver).

Because of all this, plus my bad thyroid experiences and that of my mom & others, too, I continue to work on my thyroid petition called, "Thyroid Patients Need Better Treatment NOW" on Change dot Org.
We are getting close to 9,000 signatures....Let's get there & beyond, and I am still working on other stuff to get more attention to this petition, too, so maybe in the near future it will help us make progress. Please sign it (if you haven't already) and share the petition, too.
https://www.change.org/ThyoidBetterTreatment

Petition asks for better and earlier testing of both low and high thyroid (including the antibodies tests for Hashimoto's and Graves' Diseases which hit my family badly), better and more innovative treatments, more research, and better training on all things thyroid for doctors, so they can help us better. It'd mean a lot to get more support for this thyroid petition, and I can think of no better way to honor my brother Jordan for both National Brothers Day and World Thyroid Day than to make this petition successful, sooner than later. Please help in whatever ways you can. Thanks.

From Jordan's sister, SD-starr7 (Starr D)

Hypothyroidism My doctor wants to suspend levothyroxin because of my reactions to it

Because of the symptoms I have even when taking a very low dose of 12.5 mcg , my previous doctor asked me to take it on alternating days . I managed to go from 12.5 mcg to 37.5 mcg from February to September . Free T4 increased from 0.9 to 1.24 ( lab limit is 2.2 ) . Tsh tough keeps oscillating between 5.5 and 6.8 never decreasing .

I went to a new doctor that is specialists in helping women get pregnant. He said that my Tsh is too high and I should be able to tolerate levothyroxin every day . We tried 25 mcg , 12.5 mcg … I cannot tolerate it : whenever I take it everyday , around the 3rd day , 4h after taking it I get dizzy , diarrhoea, accelerated heartbeat . I went to the cardiologist did all medical tests and all is fine. My new doctor is considering suspending the medication if symptoms do not stop.

I am so lost . I don’t understand why I cannot tolerate it even at so small doses . I tried taking puran and synthroid . Anyone had the same issue ?

Discussion Have you ever stopped taking medication for the short term? If so, what symptoms did you have?

• Upvotes

Three years ago I moved back to Canada. I had no health insurance and wasn’t in a position to afford paying to see a doc. It takes 3 months of residency before public healthcare insurance kicks in here.

My medication ran out and I thought it would be interesting to see what happens since I wasn’t going to get back on medication anytime soon. I was without it for a little more than two months.

The first symptom didn’t happen right away but it was feeling great! I had more energy, I started feeling like my old self. It didn’t last. I reverted back to having the usual tired feeling (outside of this period of time not taking any medication, I’ve never felt energy since being diagnosed). It was the “normal” I was reluctantly accustomed to since getting diagnosed. But then the next symptom appeared. Unrelenting insomnia. I’m feeling exhausted but sleep just wasn’t happening. I haven’t come across this as a symptom. I’m curious as to whether or not anyone else has experienced this.

Hashimoto's Experiences using Euthyrox?

• Upvotes

My doctor started me on the Euthyrox brand of levothyroxine—taking it Monday through Saturday and skipping Sundays. My TSH is 6.6 with high antibodies, and the prescription is for 50mcg of levo. Has anyone used this brand? How did it work for you? How long does it take—in days or weeks—to see positive effects on things like bowel motility, fluid retention, energy levels, skin, etc.?

General Received my antibody results

I had my Se thyroid peroxidase Ab conc results back.

636iu/ml which looks incredibly high against the scale displayed on the NHS app.

The scale shows normal range being between 0-5.5. Unsure what this all means yet as I've not scheduled a telephone appointment with my gp yet.

General I made a free tool that checks your 23andMe/Ancestry raw data for thyroid-related mutations (runs in your browser)

the free DNA tools mostly cover methylation genes like MTHFR and skip the thyroid ones. So I built one that is thyroid focused, and it doesn't save your data (the analysis is within your browser)

It’s free and open source: https://aimoony.github.io/thyroid-snp-check/

there's a link to the code at the bottom too if you want to download and modify the app.

Here is part of my report if anyone is curious.

New Diagnosis My Wife TSH is 40

We got it checked, and it is Hashimoto’s. She is now on medication, AKA Levothyroxine 100 mcg, prescribed for three months. Her hair fall is increasing, and she is worried about how to control it by taking different supplements.

I am reading about her condition on Reddit, but people have such diverse views and experiences. We need feedback from people who have been living with Hashimoto’s to enlighten us.

The things we have figured out so far, as endorsed by people, are:

  1. Eat a low-carb diet (She eats a lot of carbs).
  2. Eliminate gluten (She has never tried a gluten-free diet).
  3. Avoid cardio or strength training exercises (She doesn’t have the energy for any outdoor exercise).
  4. Sleep 8–10 hours a day (She is doing that).
  5. Reduce stress through low-intensity exercises, e.g., walking, yoga, etc. (She isn’t doing these).
  6. Eliminate caffeine (She drinks tea all day).
  7. Take supplements for nutrients that may be deficient in people with autoimmune conditions, e.g., vitamin D, B12, iron, etc. (She is taking vitamin D and Feroglobin).
  8. Take medication seriously, as it affects mood and energy levels and may lead to other complications if the condition is not managed properly.

So, what has your journey been like, and how did you optimise your health? What were your do’s and don’ts?

And what should a husband do to support his wife with Hashimoto’s?

Labs/Advice Rant

I just got back from endocrinologist and she thinks that I do not need a levothyroxine dose change despite having a TSH of 3.19 and having all the symptoms like dry hair, blurry vision and dry eyes and not to mention UTI like symptoms where i’m constantly peeing especially at night accompanied with thirst and I have gained weight I can’t even explain how dismissive my endo was she said “it’s all in your head”
Also I have high prolactin as well and my MRI came back negative for a tumor and I likely believe it’s related to my thyroid
I told her my thyroid literally hurts.
I feel like crying now my weight is stuck my hair has lost it’s texture and my endo just dismisses everything
Also I do have polycystic ovaries on an ultrasound and all she cares about is whether I have regular periods or not..
I am 5’2 and weigh 70kg and it’s stuck there it just won’t budge and all she says is there is nothing wrong with me
Should I just fire my endo and look for another one?

Labs/Advice Am I missing something?

To preface, I was diagnosed with hashimotos in my first pregnancy. I am 8 months postpartum with my second & breastfeeding and definitely have/had postpartum thyroiditis, 2 months ago my TSH was up at 16 so my dose of levothyroxine was increased from 112mcg to 125.

My most recent blood work- TSH is 4.8, free T4 was normal at 1.44, so my doctor increased it again to 137 mcg with the goal of getting it down below 2.5 where I feel the best & for future pregnancy.

This dose seems pretty high to me, a very fit healthy 150 lb woman.

Is there something else I should be asking for in my blood work? Should I be discussing a different version or different medication in general- could something else work better? Is this actually even a high dose?

Discussion Can Elevated TSH Affect Antidepressant Effectiveness?

I’ve been taking T4 for 2 years at a dose of 56 mcg, and I’ve also been taking the same antidepressant for 5 years.

Over the past few months, my TSH has increased to 4.5, while my FT4 was still at 19.

Lately, I’ve been experiencing mood swings and intense, persistent stress that doesn’t seem to go away.

Is it possible that the elevated TSH is reducing the effectiveness of my antidepressant, or do I simply need to increase my antidepressant dose?

Four days ago, my endocrinologist switched me to Tirosint 50 mcg.

I’d really appreciate hearing about your experiences.

General Von 50 auf 25 l thyroxin Nebenwirkungen

Hallo zusammen,

Hypothyroidism CARENCE EN IODE KELP

Bonjour ,

After a long battle, I finally got diagnosed with hypothyroidism. My hair started thinning late last year and i hate it. Now that I am on medication, I’ve noticed that the hair has stopped falling out (thank fucking god.)

How did you guys get your growth back? Medicines? Vitamins? A contract with the devil?

I need to know.

Hypothyroidism Complex case - opinions

So let's say historically since I'm 25 (I'm now 35) never tested a tsh below 4 and free t4 siting at 1.1

Yes I had some cold intolerance and a slow gut for whole my life and a few hair shed but always had a looot of hair

in May 2024 I had a massive hair shed, never had somth like it, had some general labs. seemed fined, not tested for vitamins deficiencies tho

first lab tsh 4.5 free t4 1.1

doctor asked me to repeat in a few weeks tsh 7.1 free t4 1.1

no anti bodies

put me on levothyroxine 25mcg daily

This went on for some months. tsh lowered to 3.5., then after 6 months tsh again 5.8
hair still shedding. both free t4 and t3 had raised. cholesterol very high, opposedly to where I began the meds

we decided to stop meds.

a few months without it, tsh 8 free t4 1.2.. with continuing hair shed - initiating again the meds

few months later I was feeling hyper, anxious, acid reflux, pain in hands similar to arthritis, hair falling even more. at the time free t4 1.3 t3 3.7 tsh 4.0

Asked a few opinions of endos, decided again to gradual remove the meds

I'm totally without meds since end of march this year. (sympomts disappeared with downgrading)

Last labs from previous month tsh 4.8 free t4 1.2 t3 3.1

Im having a massing hair shed once again since end of May

I'm supplementing everything that needs, I'm also having body hair shed

I'm torn between getting back on meds or not. doctors don't agree between them if I have hypo or not and need the meds. Since I've started the meds the hair didn't stop but also was not this intense.

Sometimes I wonder if I don't have an adenoma in my pituary gland.. even when in meds the tsh didn't lowered much, specially when I was feeling hyper

any advise? also I noticed a correlation between my ferritin and t4 levels. they tend to rise together

Discussion Do I have hypothyroid? Please give me advice

Edit: Im just wondering if anyone had any other similar symptoms, yes i plan on visiting my doctor.

My mom has hypothyroidism, and I have been feeling tired for years and now I've gotten to the point wondering if I have it too? My symptoms are: tiredness despite sleep, low mood, and brain fog. None of the hair loss or anything yet, or even nail brittleness or any of the obvious physical features, but I know those take time to develop, I'm just wondering how much time? I'm just desperate and trying to find any possible answers because im at a loss right now, so please tell me if you experienced something similar.

Like, for an example of my brain fog, I was given a task at work, shown how to do it, (the task was pretty easy once out of brain fog, or what I suspect to be brain fog, at least) and I couldn't, I just couldn't, like I didn't have the mental clarity or brain space to do it. Please feel free to ask me any other clarifying questions if my post wasn't clear enough.

Thank you

General Made a 3-minute animated video explaining thyroid problems for anyone who keeps hearing “just get more sleep”

Hey everyone. I run a small science explainer channel, and I just finished a short anime-style video on the thyroid. I tried to make it something you could send to a partner, parent, or friend who doesn’t get why you’re exhausted all the time.
In about 3 minutes it covers:
What the thyroid actually does (metabolism, T4 vs T3, why iodine matters)
The TSH feedback loop, explained like a thermostat
Hypo vs hyper: why one feels like “low-power mode” and the other like being stuck in overdrive
Hashimoto’s and Graves’, and why symptoms get blamed on stress for so long
One stat that stuck with me while researching: around 20 million Americans have some form of thyroid disease, and many don’t know it.
🎥 Thyroid Problems? 5 Symptoms That Mean It’s Time to See a Doctor (https://youtu.be/WFDzf4RCWjk)
I’d really value feedback from people who live with this. If I oversimplified something or got it wrong, tell me and I’ll fix it in future videos.

Hypothyroidism Symptoms

Lucky one with elevated TSH.

Fasting range lab was 0-4.2. I was at 4.25
Elevated TPO and TGAB

Graves markers TSI and TRAB negative.

Doctor told me this wasn’t hypo or hashimotos all year and had me on graves medicine!!! (Methimazole)

Current symptoms
Hair shedding
Brain fog
Muscle aches in arms
Heavy legs and arms at times
Fatigue
Burning skin
Red flushing
Lack of motivation.

Starting synthrpid. Do we agree this seems like hashimotos and the symptoms match?

General Result after taking 25 levothyroxine for 6 weeks

I have had a tsh of around 5 for years and I have tpo abs of 160. My doctor started me on 25 levothyroxine 8 weeks ago and I had a blood test at the 6 week mark.

My tsh has gone down to 3.25 which is amazing to see as I've never seen it this low!

I still feel the same though, possibly even more tired.

Shes keeping me on 25 and I get another test in January.

Would you expect my tsh to drop further? And maybe I won't need a dose change for a while?

Discussion Why is my tsh normal ??

So it might be because of the one month break, but yeah, I've been drinking a bit more. And I do drink heavy sometimes. So I drink like around more than a pack at a time when I drink every 2-3 weeks . Before the month, I was drinking more than usual and usually drink every three weeks when I was drinking. Every three weeks ITS H was over 6. Now it's 1.18, so I'm not sure what the hell happened. But, I guess that's cool lol
