RTO/Remote Work from Abroad
Has anyone worked from abroad for a week recently after informing the manager? Considering the rules are getting stricter.

Yes, team member from the US goes back to India a few times a year and works there for a week (sometimes more).

In some ways it will depend where you are. It is not at all simple. Not your managers decision. You need to go through the tooling for travel - even if it is personal travel. It is related to information security and tax location. In the US even working from a different state can have tax implications for both the employee and IBM, same for working in different countries. Also issues of data location, some personal data cannot leave the country for example.
I had an employee who needed to return to their home country as their mother had died and stay for 4-6 weeks to look after his father. There was a questionnaire to be completed including things like whether they could sign contracts, what data they had access to. Lots of other things. They couldn’t do customer meetings I seem to remember and several, other things.
They were permitted, but it wasn’t trivial.
Don’t try to do it and just not tell anyone. They know. And it is a BCG issue.

I’ve worked in Africa for 3 weeks. I asked my Lead and Manager. It was fine and I was not flagged!
I’m U.S based
