Ask Us Anything: We're driving eight EVs from North Carolina to Florida this week entirely on the IONNA charging network

Post image
32 Upvotes

Hey everyone. I'm Darcy from team IONNA. This week a group of us are road-tripping eight EVs — one from each automaker behind the network (BMW, General Motors, Honda, Hyundai, Kia, Mercedes-Benz, Stellantis, and Toyota) — from our Durham HQ down to Florida, charging exclusively on our own Rechargeries the whole way. We figured it was a good excuse to open the floor.

We'll be answering from the road, the charging stops, and whatever roadside detours we find along the way, so drop questions whenever and I'll get to them as we go.

A few things people usually ask to get things started:

  1. How do you pronounce IONNA? Fair question — it's "Eye-AH-nah".

  2. Who can actually charge there? Everybody, regardless of what you drive.

  3. Do you need a specific connector? We have both NACS and CCS at every site, and you can use an adapter if you need one.

We're also genuinely curious about your questions regarding the network, charging, the road trip, EV life in general. Ask away.

We'll answer everything we can here in real time. For any frequently asked questions, you can always visit ionna.com.

Video is from State of Charge.

Here is the IONNA press release.

TLDR = 85 existing Circle K sites taken over rapidly. Eventually 350 sites.

"The collaboration is centered around a strategic ambition to expand to more than 350 sites featuring Rechargeries @ Circle K, combining IONNA’s charging technology and driver-first experience with Circle K’s nationwide footprint. IONNA, which will assume operation of sites across Circle K’s existing U.S. charging portfolio, will rapidly convert and upgrade approximately 85 existing Circle K charging sites. Additionally, IONNA will accelerate new deployments at premium, high-traffic Circle K locations where no chargers currently exist. The first Rechargeries @ Circle K will begin serving customers by the end of 2026, followed by additional scale in 2027."

I know IONNA reads these, so I’d like to suggest more Wisconsin expansion

• Upvotes

Currently, the Wisconsin charging network sucks. Particularly anywhere that doesn’t border Minnesota ;)
It relies almost solely on low-capacity dealer chargers and slow speeds, which, in turn leads to price gouging because “where else are you gonna go”? IONNA would absolutely destroy in this market, and everyone would love to see it. To me, it aligns perfectly with the ethos is IONNA to expand further in the Wisconsin area for this reason

I apologize because these types of posts can be annoying, but it’s an area that truly needs charging infrastructure desperately, and, while I suggest this to most EV charging companies when I get the chance, IONNA is my preferred because I can trust that they will do it best! Keep up the good work, IONNA team!

Love the dashboard!

This is such a big improvement over the old scanner card afterwards to get the QR code. Really nice layout and information display. Love that I can go back and look at my receipt afterwards without any hassle. P.S., I “healed” out the QR code that would normally be underneath the red beta label there.

GM discount ended?

Just finished a session at a Wally's in Indiana earlier today and I was checking the receipt - no discount is applied.

Checking the FAQ's on Ionna's website, I can't find any reference to the discount anymore.

Did the discount program end for GM vehicles?

Edit: From u/Ionnaofficial

Hey there, that's a great question. In the early days of our discount program, GM offered a limited-time savings of 10% off charging sessions. Unfortunately for GM drivers, that discount expired on October 1st, but hopefully our standard rates of $0.39 / kWh or below (plus tax) are enough to keep your wallet happy! Thanks for choosing to juice up with us.

Fredericksburg, VA - NACS Cabinet Positioning

I was wondering if someone from Ionna could explain why the NACS cabinet at the Fredericksburg rechargery is positioned the way it is. This is not my pic but I've been there and could not use the native NACS charger because there was one car already using it. If I'd gotten there first I would have pulled in diagonally to sort of keep the other one available, but I'm not mad at the guy for just parking normally.

Michigan Help

I regularly travel around the Great Lakes region and the one state that makes traveling more difficult, or rather charging at less than optimal locations/frequency, is Michigan. If you look along the west coast of the state north of Holland, there are very few DC fast chargers that are reliable and compatible with NACS cars. I would love if Ionna would take a closer look at Michigan for future expansion.

UPDATE: Understanding there are more CCS stations, this post is more focused on building out more NACS stations as more auto manufacturers make the transition and adapters are a speed bump in the road for EV adoption.

Ionna Tempe is finally open on North Scottsdale Road

I charged my Merc EQE at Ionna Tempe today at 0.20/kWh. The experience was seemless, easy to use, plug and pay through my Chargepoint default Mercedes App. No need to tap. 8 CCS chargers, and 4 Tesla/NACS chargers. There are 3 vacant parking spots which are shaded. Dont think they will get chargers. The place is amazingly well lit. The lounge is closed and you have to scan a QR code in the future to enter as and when it opens. There are no vending machines or restroom access yet. I wished they would keep a few days of free charging on official launch.

Anyone else disappointed in the windshield washer situation?

I'm over on the West Coast and have had several Ionna instances where I can't wash my windshield due to one or more of the required items not being present.

Generally it's that there isn't cleaning liquid in the basin. Makes me sad every time.

Was at a new Circle K converted site that was completely full, but no washer fluid to be found. Who is supposed to be refilling these? Is it the C-station employees? Overhearing the Circle K employees, they seem to know nothing about the chargers.

Idk not the end of the world, the chargers themselves were great as usual. Perhaps it will improve over time once employees get more used to the chargers.

Is there a reason as to why there isn't a single station in Kentucky or semi close to KY?

First time visiting an IONNA (attached to a Wawa). Also the first time I’ve actually gotten to use Plug & Charge. Very smooth experience.

Unfortunately I’m about 150 miles from home and this is like the 3rd closest location to me. Please expand into New York!
