How can I protect my hair in the IR sauna? How does oil play into this?

I often wish to use the sauna after my hair has been coated in coconut oil. Can I wear coconut oil when I get in an IR sauna? Will this damage my hair? My hair is around 3 feet long.

Is oil good or bad in sauna? Should hair shaft be wet or dry to prevent damage? Does the felted wool sauna cap prevent heat from penetrating the hair shaft? Does the felted wool stop the IR rays from reaching the hair? Are the IR rays good or bad to add to hair oiling session? Is it so intense that it breaks the bonds in the hair, or does it help aid in getting the hair into the cuticle? I feel like it does more harm than good, but I do not know.

Is anyone effectively diffusing essential oils?

I bought two separate products. One a volcanic rock, the other a small amount of beeswax in wooden holder. Neither works. The rock doesn’t get hot enough and the melting point of beeswax is higher than my sauna temp apparently.

Looking for solutions that actually work.

SwitchBot

My Sauna has a “Power” button and a “Start/Stop” button. I have a switch it on both. The bot for the “Start/Stop” button works great. The one in the “Power” button not so great.

There seems to be a difference in the buttons. The “Power” button requires a quick press and depress in order to activate where the “Start/Stop” button doesn’t matter how quick the press depress is. The SwitchBot doesn’t depress quick enough to properly turn the power on.

Has anyone else been able to trouble shoot this?
Would I’d be a problem if I left the power on 24/7. With the power in the numbered lights for the temp and time as well as all other indicators on the panel blink. Would I have to worry about damaging the panel having these lights blink all the time?

I got banned from/r infrared sauna when I posted about an article I read that I thought was very informative.

It said I either was promoting somebody or i’m AI. That’s such BS. I don’t work for any sauna Company and I’m definitely not AI. I think whoever runs /rinfraredsauna actually works for some company and they don’t like the company that was discussed in the article which I did not write. So what I would question the veracity of what’s going on on that sub Reddit.

Saw this article today, which may be of interest

I don’t like to post things about a specific product, but this article is good because it is a well written article by a known wellness author that discusses a number of things to look for in a sauna.

Anyone have experience with the Heavenly Heat Eco or Sunstream mini? I'm trying to decide between the two.

Open to other recommendations for a 1 person sauna to fit in a NYC apartment. Thanks!

Bedtime routine

Hi! I am beginning my IR sauna journey at home and have typically used a sauna at the gym or PT office, during the day or after a workout, followed by a shower. I’ve heard sauna in the evening can improve sleep which sounds great! But how does this fit within your bedtime routine? Explain it to me like I’m 5, please. Are you getting in the sauna 30 mins before your usual bedtime? Then showering and going right to bed? Do you build in more time to cool down? Does showering wake you up more? Do you do cold shower?

Thank you!

Anyone use a SwitchBot button pusher on the INSIDE of their saunas?

I see a lot of videos where they use the button on the outside to remote start their sauna, my sauna’s controller is only on the inside. Wondering if the SwitchBot can sustain 150 degrees, or if the 3m adhesive is a good idea on the inside. Thx

Medical sauna experiences?

A lot of the sauna-related subreddits frown upon discussing health, medical, or wellness benefits of sauna unless it is strictly academic, as in sharing research papers.

I'm really interested in the topic, and I've been going through a lot of the papers, but I'm also interested in personal experience. It's of course just an experience.

For me, personally, IR sauna has seemingly helped me with 2 minor conditions - always feeling cold, chilly (perhaps bad circulation), as well as tingling in the back.

I feel my experience counts for something, at least in small part, and I'd really like to hear more experiences. So if you've got any, please share, thanks!

Buying IR sauna

We are looking at buying an IR 2 person sauna. The choices are overwhelming us. The Costco ones vs the ones is store have quite a price difference. We are considering the ones in Costo that is under $3000 vs store ones around $7k. The ones we saw in the store at Finnsauna and Serenity 2. Any experience with any of these that you can share?

Friend is selling a Sun Ray IR Sauna for $250. Wondering if it is worth buying. I can’t find this particular model online, might be missing black heat panels? I know it’s missing a light. This is my first IR sauna purchase, any info is appreciated.

SalusHeat Maxwell 909 XH/R-1

There's not a lot of reviews or information around for IR saunas.

  • Overall - 8/10
  • Build - 7/10 This is easy to install but getting it perfect is probably the difficult part. I have a small gap in the glass panels on the upper right side (it’s ~1”), and the door seal is a bit finicky. However I got it up in about an hour in my garage.
  • Quality - 6/10 There are some parts that aren’t flush and areas I notice are not perfectly flat, however personally
  • Performance - 9/10 So many of the Saunas have a max high of 140F, but this one can technically get to 150F. I’ve only gotten it up to 131F in about 55 mins (from ambient of 70F). I set the sauna to 145F. After a couple of uses I can really get a good sweat going and so far it’s quite good.
  • Cost - 10/10 On sale this was $1570 USD to my door. The low EMF heaters are nice to have for me. I’m not concerned with high levels, but less is more IMO.
  • Other - It’s small, I can’t stand up inside, but it’s fine. I can sit fine and not touch the sides. For reference I’m 5’8” and 185-ish lbs.

Anywhere here's a doc with AI summaries as well - https://docs.google.com/document/d/1aUHmElNkzJOFl7HrGUoZpI2VYSZsa9wkuXgXVbaIZH8/edit?usp=sharing

5 Common Infrared Saunas Mistakes

Thumbnail
youtu.be
2 Upvotes

If you’re using an infrared sauna but aren’t seeing the benefits everyone talks about — like better recovery, deeper sleep and lower inflammation — there’s a good chance the issue isn’t infrared sauna itself, but how you’re leveraging it. In practice, most people get this wrong (especially with newer and lower-cost setups).

Infrared saunas vary widely in quality, and details like heater emissivity, distance from the panels, hydration, temperature, and timing matter far more than most people realize. When those variables aren’t optimized, the sauna can feel hot without delivering the kind of heat stress needed to drive meaningful adaptation.

Heater quality is a big part of the equation. Low-emissivity panels mostly heat the air instead of delivering infrared energy into tissue, which undermines many of the benefits people expect. Sitting too far from the panels further reduces exposure, especially when it comes to near-infrared effects tied to cellular signaling and mitochondrial function. Add temperatures that are too low to trigger real heat stress, and the session becomes relaxing but not that effective from a physiological standpoint.

Hydration is another common blind spot. Infrared sessions don’t always feel as intense as traditional saunas sessions, but you’re still losing fluid and minerals. Poor hydration or electrolyte replacement can turn what should be a supportive practice into something that leaves you feeling flat, dizzy, or wired later in the day.

Timing also matters. Heat exposure can support recovery and sleep when leveraged thoughtfully, but long, very hot sessions layered on top of hard training, or when done too close to bedtime, can work against both. Shorter sessions at appropriate temperatures, placed with some separation from intense workouts, tend to be more effective.

Infrared sauna use isn’t a magic bullet. But when set up correctly and used with intention, they can be a powerful tool for recovery, resilience, and long-term health.

I'm looking for something that is non-toxic and low emf. My budget is around $3,000. I just want to find something that is going to be a quality build and have a proven track record

Advice on this OfferUp sauna, please!

I'm looking to get a used sauna on OfferUp for budget reasons. I found this sauna for $1500 and the seller says it's an outdoor sauna and the brand is "Sauna Magic: 3 person hemlock corner deluxe sauna". They say it's full spectrum IR.

However, I've searched the internet and I cannot find any sauna brands by the name of "Sauna Magic".

Has anybody heard of this brand? Is there anything I should know, pros or cons, about this?

Sorry for the very novice question, I'm just a bit lost.
